There are many benefits of building a base on the Moon. Below are the ones that I feel are most important. Becoming an “interplanetary” species. It is one of our next steps as a species. Going further into space (ex. Mars) and attempting to live there should not be done before confirming that we have the ability to live on another celestial body. Inhabiting Mars before the Moon would be like trying to run a marathon before you had taken your first steps. Related to the previous reason, learning how to build an extraterrestrial base. Doing it closer to home would be less of a risk and confirm that extraterrestrial construction is possible. Health impacts of living in space. Funding permitting, astronauts could be sent to the Moon and build a base in the time that it would take for one craft to even reach Mars’ surface.
