Barney the Dinosaur Got Death Threats, Voice Actor Claims

Back in the 1990s, Barney the dinosaur was a huge hit for children on television. Now, a new docuseries called ā€œI Love You, You Hate Me,ā€ is exploiting a disturbing dark side surrounding the beloved purple character. Bob West, the original voice of Barney, told Inside Editionā€™s Ann Mercogliano there were even death threats. ā€œThere was group called Jihad Against Barney,ā€ he said. He feels that Barney stood for ā€œinclusion, understanding, compassion, caring for each other.ā€

  1. As an autistic child born in the early 2000s, I grew watching Barney and other kids shows at the time. I'm aware that there were people who didn't like Barney, especially those that made grounded videos out of him on GoAnimate (I'm a GoAnimator BTW). While people may not be fans of Barney, sending hate and death threats to anyone involved with the show is inexcusable. I feel bad for the voice actor who had to deal with stuff like this.

  3. I can imagine Brad Swaile as Jin and Light from Tekken and Death Note teaming up together for once to know more about the crimes of the Barney Haters, alongside with Sam Riegel as Phoenix Wright.

  6. It's strange for me. I dislike Barney as a character. Barney has always come across as "overly" innocent and babyish, things like that come across to me in an off-putting and negative way. That's where the irritation comes in for adults, I think. But at the end of the day, it's not meant to be for adults, it's meant for young children, and that's what makes all the difference. It's meant to be a purely wholesome show for young children. And above all else, there is nothing that justifies targeting actual people. We shouldn't have to tell grown adults that Barney's voice actor doesn't deserve to be given death threats because his character is too babyish.
