Barefoot Tracks of Whangarei: Smugglers Cove (Te Whara/Bream Head Scenic Reserve Part 2)

Te Whara /Bream Head Scenic Reserve is at the end of the Whangarei Heads, and extends from Urquharts Bay to Ocean Beach. There are several barefoot tracks in this park (one of them being part of the Te Araroa Trail – https://www.teararoa.org.nz/)

In Part 2 we are walking over to Smugglers Cove. This is one week after Cyclone Gabrielle hit New Zealand causing damage the forests and beaches in Northland (and catastrophic damage elsewhere in New Zealand). Much of the sand at Smugglers Cove has completely disappeared, leaving lots of boulders to jump on.

‘Te Whara’ is named for the principal wife of Manaia, an early Rangatira (chief) of this region. Manaia also has a mountain named after him. It is thought that the track that runs from Urquharts Bay to Ocean Beach is at least 700 years old. How wonderful to walk in the barefoot tracks of ancestors past.

If you are in New Zealand during our summer, make sure you wear sunscreen, a shirt and hat to prevent sun damage, as the ozone layer is thinner here, and people get burnt very quickly (for me, it only takes 10 minutes).

  1. Hi

That cyclone has made a lot of things unusable and things still happening near my region the Waikato. I am majorly missing the beach and want to go back as soon as possible sick of missing out on the beach because of the weather washing roads away etc. Have had an awful summer the weather ruined it majorly. This has to be the worst summer ever ever experienced. I have been to that beach great beach. Having a hard time in Waikato with weather and other issues.
