After evolving from a aeronautical company in the mid 1920’s, to a major airline along the United State East Coast by the 40’s, Eastern Airlines was an iconic brand name that only grew larger by the year. With a massive fleet of state of the art aircraft and service spanning multiple countries, it seemed there was no stopping this massive airline. However it all came crashing down by the late 90’s and saw the brand name disappear entirely by the early 90’s following a devastating bankruptcy. Join me today as we take a look at the rise and fall of this once revered airline.

I have a very old box at my house that says "EASTERN VAN LINES" with the hockey stick eastern logo. I've never heard of that division. Do I have lost media in my house?

Mid to late 80’s became a feast for those of us who flew NY to Boston regularly. Fare wars drove the prices down to $29 one-way and enabled carpet-baggers like People Express to get a foothold. People Express, which rolled a pay cart up the aisle after airborne to process credit cards for the fare. Truly a low water mark in customer service.

Please in the future do an episode on TWA…❤ Because "It was the only way to fly". 😉. I heard about how they let their existing pilots go. It was the most despicable and disrespectful way of doing things. And now it's even worse with the mergers and fewer airlines to choose from higher prices etc.
Greedy capitalists gutting yet another company. What else is new? You'd think they would learn when you cut employee wages, the employees fight back. Just when Eastern was losing customers to the competition, they start abusing their workforce, causing labor shortages and forcing even more customers to leave. Corporate raiders should be imprisoned with all assets seized, including company assets they sold off. Unfortunately for us, these same rich assholes destroying everything for shareholder profits will fight tooth and nail to prevent any type of repercussions. You cannot end this practice without ending capitalism itself. Never give these freaks the power in the first place. Repurpose all industry for the working class instead of some corporate suit who only gets his dopamine release when the Microsoft Copilot AI tells him the numbers in his spreadsheet are 10% better than last year.
Bill Cherry (retired American Airlines Captain) was the Captain of the B-17 that crashed in the pacific with Rickenbacker. Rickenbacker was found before the rest of the crew because the crew cut his raft free at night. The crew was tired of his endless bitching and complaining. I cannot get over how good the intro sequence for Bankrupt is. The audio effects when the Kodak camera flash briefly takes over the monologue is incredible.
Good program. However the singing highs at the beginning of every sentence ending off with the lows (Canadian style) is quite annoying.
We used tonfky Eastern out of Newark as a kid. I still have the old wings that they'd give kids.

Supposedly Eastern's Disney attraction was extremely popular because it was one of the only free attractions at the time of ticketbook attractions and it meant being able to get out of the heat.

My cousin came to visit from Florida. I was a kid. We picked her up at jfk eastern airlines. This was my first time seeing a plane up close. She used Eastern.
1991 was one of the worst years for aviation, two american giants gone, first Eastern and then Pan Am. Glad to see that at least Eastern airlines is somewhat back in service
I would say that it wasn´t only the Management to blame. The Union and the workers has to take some of the blame to. I notice this in Europe that the unions useally love to get more witout the after thought of the consequences of that/those pay rises or the benefits. Its is a normal human behavior to grab as much as possibile and pay as little as possible.
