It was reported that the ship lost power, then regained it. Find the longer version of this video. 2 or 3 seconds (before what's seen here) there is no smoke coming from the stack. Suddenly black smoke appears. Apparently they regained power, but not soon enough to avoid the collision.

Two wrong decisions were made: the first one, upon regaining power, the captain tried to stop the vessel full throttle in reverse. The aft of the ship turned to port as a result. That was causing the black smoke.
The second fault was dropping the starboard anchor. These decisions caused a turn to starboard, directly towards the pillars of the bridge. Captain should have moved forward, keeping pressure on his rudder, steering away from the pillars. He could have just missed the pillars doing so.

The bridge should have had bumper piers on the sides of columns , as all others have that were made in that time. Expecially in shipping zones.
