Bad Batch season 2 episode 12, is one juicy episode and we need to break it down. So let’s get straight into it.

We open the episode on Coruscant at the military headquarters and we see crosshair waiting and watching as a group of clones complain about being forced to retire. In front of this entire group, is a female imperial officer known as Captain Bragg, who is also the same officer back in season 1 on the planet Raxus. And what we are seeing here is the effect of the recruitment defense bill that was passed back in episode 8, and the bored tone of officer bragg (scene), suggests that she has been giving clones the rundown far too many times. Crosshair then meets his new commanding officer by the name of Lieutenant Nolan, an entirely new character. And from the onset it’s pretty clear that this Lieutenant does not like clones at all, referring to them as used equipment, underlying his beliefs that clones are not human but objects.

We learn that Crosshair and the squad have been assigned to Barton 4 where supposed high value cargo has been under attack by raiders. As crosshair and the rest land on Barton 4, it becomes pretty apparent that the planet is a snow covered planet, much like Hoth. But what’s really interesting is that if you pay attention to Lieutenant Nolan’s uniform, you will notice that it has been specifically designed for cold weather. Indicating that the Lieutenant was well aware of the conditions they would be headed into. But when you look at the clones you’ll realize that they are only wearing their standard armour, completely underdressed for the cold especially considering that clones do have specially designed armour for these situations. Meaning that the Lieutenant couldn’t be bothered to inform the rest of the squad about what they need to prepare highlighting the complete lack of care for his own men. The team meet up with Commander Mayday, the officer in charge and we are then introduced to Hexx and Veetch, the last few remaining clones assigned to protect this outpost. We also learn that reinforcements were supposed to have arrived 36 rotations ago, indicating that the Empire really couldn’t care less about the lives of these clones.

But instead of sympathizing with the struggles of the clones, Nolan chastises them for their failure and assumes command to which Mayday responds rather sarcastically. Noland demands some respect and Mayday responds with… (scene). Which is a sentiment that seems to echo Rex’s mantra (scene). Crosshair and Mayday get acquainted and the two quickly build up some rapport with each other. Something which Crosshair desperately needs given how lonely he has been thus far within the Empire. The two inspect their surroundings and crosshair asks how the raiders have been getting past the sensors to which Mayday concludes that the cold must have degraded the equipment. And the replacements which he requested have yet to arrive, once again showing just how little the empire cares for them. The two also wonder what is inside those crates and crosshair notices a vulture. The two are then alerted to the fact that raiders have infiltrated the base but in the process of apprehending the raiders Hexx and Veetch were killed, leaving Mayday the last of his squad. But Crosshair still manages to get a shot off, hitting one of the raiders.

Back at base, Mayday arranges the helmets of his fallen squad members and we get a quick snapshot of just how many have died trying to protect this outpost. And its a really sad moment until Nolan barges in demanding action not realizing that Mayday has no more men left to command. Which is part and partial of how the Empire views its clones with very little care. Nolan assigns crosshair and mayday to trackdown the raiders and crates, and the two are clearly irritated by their new commanding officer…

  1. I interpreted Crosshair as still covering for Clone Force 99 – he basically says they died, knowing that's how Mayday will interpret it, and he doesn't correct him.

He didn't know that Rampart learned Clone Force 99 survived, and he has no idea about Dr. Hemlock looking for Omega (which obviously doesn't make sense if he presumes they're all dead except for Crosshair).

So, as far as Crosshair knows, the Empire thinks the others all died. As far as he knows, the longer he covers for them, the longer they can stay out of harm's way.

Therefore, this confirms that Crosshair's loyalties were still at least somewhat conflicted.

But this could really change, tragically, if he is turned into "a believer". That's really what it looks like to me. I am guessing that he's going to be turned into a mind controlled "believer", and they'll order him to hunt down Omega.

  2. I interpreted the vulture as a symbol for the clones regarding their dim future within the empire. How they’ll soon end up as scraps to be picked upon no matter what they do. At the near end of the episode, the lieutenant mentioned leaving Mayday’s body right there on the base, really hammering home how little the empire cared for the clones. It’s cruel to see that Mayday’s body will just be left there as a carcass for a vulture, showing how inhuman the empire is. Crossheir’s time with the empire was drawing near, especially with the vulture dawning before him which probably supposed to show his snapping point as he guns down his commanding officer to end up the same way as Mayday had
