Baby Yamato – Episode 13 – Dreadnought Improvement Project Japanese Campaign

Designing a whole new paradigm of ship is a little tricky and the first attempt doesn’t go particularly well. Nevertheless we persist and end up producing our first fast battleship, our first ship with 16 inch guns, the first capital ship with triple main guns, and the first ship with an all or nothing armour scheme. Truly the age of the old guard is over!

  2. Genuine question (Im fairly new to the game), is there a point in keeping the caliber of the guns uniform? In case of the baby Yamato here, 45 for the 16" and 5"?

I usually always max barrel length to get the max range except with the super high caliber guns where you start reaching beyond 60-70km but i see you do it all the time, is there some benefit other than not increasing the reload as much?

  3. New Power Projection

Yomiuri shinbun, Tokyo, 14 October 1929

The Kaigun Kensetsu-Kyoku of the Kaigun-shō has announced the specifications for a new battleship class for the Dai-Nippon Teikoku Kaigun with the new 16”/40 Mark 3 gun.

The Satusma class will consist of 3 ships; the Satsuma, Shōkaku, and Tenryu, all to be built out of Sasebo in the Nagasaki Prefecture on Kyūshū. Designed to a target displacement of 60,000 tons and a top speed of 28 knots, the class will use the double geared turbine engines powered by steam from balanced boilers burning oil formula II vented through one funnel generating a total of 166,993 indicated horse power to turn four screws to obtain the required 28 knot speed with a range of 7,193 nautical miles on a final displacement as designed of 59,983 tons. Electro-hydraulic II systems turns the balanced rudder and a diesel auxiliary provides supplementary and emergency power.

The main armament is three triple 5,298 ton 130 man crewed 16”/40 mark 3 gun turrets on the centerline, two mounted super firing forward, one mounted aft. These fire a balanced magazine of 1048 kg base fuze high explosive shells with a range of 28.8 km and 1710 kg armor piercing capped II shells with a range of 32.8 km using low burn Cordite III as the propellant and TNT IV as the bursting charge. The turrets have anti-flash fire protection systems and advanced electro-hydraulic turning engines for a rate of turn of 1.51 degrees/sec. The guns have enhanced reloading systems giving a rate of fire of 0.9 rounds/min. The guns are aimed by the type V coincidence range finders. The class also carries Radio Detection Finders (RDF).

For a secondary the class carries six triple 5”/45 Mark 4 gun turrets, and for a tertiary the class carries fourteen triple 3”/25 Mark 4 dual purpose turrets.

The ship has standard compartmentation with reinforced bulkheads and watertight hatches, a double bottom hull, and anti-flooding systems. The “All or Nothing” armor scheme is employed, and the class carries a main belt of 16” of Krupp III, with 4” for the extended belts, 3” for the 1st inner belt, and 1.5” for the 2nd inner belt, and 0.1” for the 3rd inner belt. The Main deck has 6” of armor, the extended and 1st inner deck 1.5” of armor and the 2nd inner deck 0.5” of splinter protection with the 3rd inner deck having 0.1” of armor. The superstructure has 1.5” of armor and the conning tower 18”. The 16”/40 gun turrets carry a face and barbette armor of 18” and a top armor of 8”. The 5” secondary gun turrets have 1.5” of face and top armor.

The class carries a crew of 1403 officers and enlisted men under the command of the Kaigun-taisa. Each ship costs $882 million and will take 29 months to complete with a commissioning time of three months at least. Estimated monthly maintenance in port is $35.3 million. These battleships will be assigned to the Dai-ichi Kantai.

  5. Return to the Dual Purpose Destroyer

Yomiuri shinbun, Tokyo, 11 December 1927

The Kaigun Kensetsu-Kyoku of the Kaigun-shō has announced the specifications for a new destroyer class for the Dai-Nippon Teikoku Kaigun with a balance of guns and torpeodes.

The Ikazuchi class will consist of 10 ships; the Ikazuchi, Kagi. Hayashimo, Take, Shigure, Shigur, Ōnami, Nenohi, Maki, and Keyaki, five to be built out of Maizuru in the Kyoto Prefecture on Honshu and five to be built at Matsuyama in the Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku. Designed to a target displacement of 3,000 tons and a top speed of 35 knots, the class will use the double geared turbine engines powered by steam from naturally aspirated boilers burning oil vented through one funnel generating a total of 45,019 indicated horse power to turn three screws to obtain the required 35 knot speed with a range of 17,133 nautical miles on a final displacement as designed of 2,973 tons. Electro-hydraulic II systems turns the balanced rudder and a diesel auxiliary provides supplementary and emergency power.

The main armament is three twin 5”/35 mark 4 gun turrets on the centerline, two mounted super firing forward, one mounted aft with one on a barbette. These fire a magazine of many base fuze high explosive shells and some armor piercing capped II shells using low burn Cordite III as the propellant and TNT III as the bursting charge. The turrets have anti-flash fire protection systems and advanced electro-hydraulic turning. The guns have enhanced reloading systems. The guns are aimed by the type V coincidence range finders. The class also carries Radio Detection Finders (RDF).

The Ikazuchi class has two quintuple deck torpedo launchers, one mounted ahead of the secondary tower, one behind, using a magazine of 21” mark 3 torpedoes. The class carries Sonar II for torpedo detection.

The ship has extensive compartmentation with reinforced bulkheads and watertight hatches, a double bottom hull, and anti-flooding systems. Krupp III Armor is 0.5” thick on the main belt, 0.1” thick on the extended belt. The main deck is 0.2” thick and the extended decks are 0.1” thick. The superstructure has 0.1” of armor and the conning tower 1.1”. The 5” turrets have 1.5” of face and top armor.

The class carries a crew of 283 officers and enlisted men under the command of the Kaigun-shōsa. Each ship costs $70 million and will take 8 months to complete with a commissioning time of one month at least. Estimated monthly maintenance in port is $2.6 million. These destroyers will be deployed to stations around the world.

  6. Russian Admiral Taunts Japan

Yomiuri shinbun, Tokyo, 18 April 1927

The Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Navy Admiral Lev Viktorov has decided that he is ready for a rematch with the Empire of Japan. Considering that the last peace agreement the Soviet Union made with Japan stopped us from marching on their Capital of Vladivostok, he should understand we are no farther away than we were before.

  7. London Falls!

Yomiuri shinbun, Tokyo, 13 April 1927

Revolution has overcome the government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

Members of the House of Windsor have been sent into exile, the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir John Campbell, also has gone into exile.

The Tory party has slim majority in Parliament, allied with Unionists and the Liberals against Labour. The Communists have seat in the House of Commons and one daft member of the Lords, but are not in the opposition or government. Though the new parliament has declared a Republic, they retain the aristocracy.

  8. I don't think anyone mentioned this but you've been placing the Mark 3 secondary guns on top of the mast of the Main Tower for every Capital Ships you've been designing.

Having Mark 3 secondary guns like the 3inch on top of the mast of the main tower isn't necessary since they only add more weight to the vessel and it's not a realistic design of Japanese Capital Ships and it makes the vessel ugly.

Plus you don't have a reason to have any secondary guns on top of the mast of the main tower because there's no aircraft in the game and the secondary guns that are on top of the mast of the main tower does affect the Pitch/Roll of the vessel which isn't a issue on the newer hulls or the vessels that were refitted with mid game hulls.

  9. Weight saving option re: your new DD (or any future ships with torps). Just because you have access to quad or quint launchers doesn't mean you have to put them on. I often install smaller torp launchers if I need to shave a few tons off a design. Of course, player torps are potentially useful now, so I guess you're giving up more by doing that.
