  1. I consider gary and doug friends, and have had the pleasure of winning an earlier iteration of this tournament in 2019 with doug as my teammate.

We've spoken for years about moving b-gaming to a level more like e-gaming, where there are personalities, characters, stats, live broadcast games with commentary, tournaments, etc. Catan and Twilight Imperium have some of this content, and now so does Axis and Allies. Thanks to gary for making it happen; it remains on my bucket list to win a tournament with Gary as my teammate–axis and allies competitive play has introduced me to some of my best friends, and I often travel to see them.

  2. This tournament did not attract the best players, only a subset. Let’s not over-hype this please. I am very active in the A&A community, at both Steam for 1942 and TripleA, and I have never heard of this “world championship “. This is also FTF, and the best players play online.

  3. I play online. I seriously never see this done by the allies. Moving the IS Atlantic fleet to the Pacific never happens online. Online always seems to play the same with a KGF. This was a joy to watch.

  4. Thank you for the content – very informative and entertaining – I am glad that you advertised Acquire – Our family has played this game since the 70s and is one of our favorites along with Feudal which is basically chess, except with up to 4 players and you can move one piece or all of them – so chess on steroids – I hope you check it out – It is just another one of those Avalon hill games that is great. If either Acquire or Fuedal goes online, look me up for a game!

  5. Am I the only one who thinks cruisers are basically worthless to buy, and all I ever use the ones I start with is to tank the next hit after the first battleship hit? Like there's no scenario where I'd rather have a cruiser than a fighter, and the only time I'd rather have a cruiser than a destroyer is if I already have other destroyers. Cruisers need to cost 9 IPC or get some kind of buff like 3 move or AA or something to give them a raison d'etre imo.

  6. Just finished watching, want to say this was an excellent presentation, one of if not the most watchable playthrough of a boardgame I've ever seen. Looking forward to watching the next games, and would love to see this strategy really put through its paces when the dice go another way. Also just wanted to ask if it's typical for the allies to wind up with a whole extra sub? That, along with taking out the German bomber in Ukraine to save the British fighter in Egypt seems absolutely devastating to Japan. I'm used to playing allies with weighing my prospects of going into SZ37 with 1 sub, 1 fighter, and 2 cruisers, not 2 subs, 2 fighters, and 2 cruisers. Completely different math there!

  7. Great video! I'm curious about the non combat move of landing the US fighter on the UK carrier. I'll admit I haven't seen that one cuz I do online a lot lol. I believe that you were planning to also slide back the UK carrier to join the US fleet in philippines, when you do so the US fighter also tags along is that right

  8. Wonderful breakdown of all the phases, very easy to follow what’s going on in the game and I absolutely love that you guys put up the percentages too. I loved the early aggression from the allies, will definitely be trying this in my own games in the future.

  9. I have the game in storage. Haven't played it in 15 years. First thing I thought of when I saw this video was; what about balance? That question was answered promptly. One of the favourite pastimes in my board-game club back in the day was debating how one best could make A&A balanced. No one played with the original rules. The fact that, I assume, the game was designed to be a kind of hybrid of a balanced game and a WW2 re-enactment was weird. Or maybe it actually wasn't play-tested enough and the design was simply unintentionally imbalanced. I don't know.
