My favorite detail about this episode is that Sokka's and Katara's mother has a face that very closely resembles Sokka's face. A few episodes ago during "the runaway", Sokka said "I can no longer remember my mother's face. When I try to picture it, Katara's is the only one I see."

It is a children's show meant for a certain age group but it is a very good children's show that the story remains timeless which is why as adults we appreciate it and see other things in it. This is much like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars to some ways. They are created and meant for a younger person. However the stories are written to keep the attention of older people and spark their imaginations. Getting older it has often bothered me that rereading Lord of the Rings it really has not grown up but the story still stays enjoyable. The Hobbit has become a book I can finish in a couple of sittings. Its ok that stories are built for various age groups. They just have to keep their wonder and ability to spark thought. Stories like Tess of the d'Urbervilles I had to read as a younger person but the issues that it tackled were more for a young adult. I missed it as a kid but I saw it at an older age.

This show has always been somewhere in my head every day. I grew up with it and I think the beginning of this video where your talking about the transition from different phases of life and how you find new meaning every watch through. It’s so true. I’m now a mother to two little boys. This show and Naruto will always hold a very special place in my heart ❤ the story telling and the character building is top tier. ❤

They keep saying gone. But Kya was still there. They are using the word gone instead of dead. Child filter and all. Notice how Zuko is much better with his bending against Azula. He is less aggressive now. No grunts and rage.

I’ve always liked that The Southern Raiders episode ends with Katara choosing not to forgive Yon Rha. A lot of tv shows (especially ones primarily aimed at kids) even today would normally go the route of just having the protagonist forgive whoever wronged them—even if it doesn’t make sense. I think it’s pretty cool that ATLA chose to subvert that trope.
When Katara said her mom was gone she means she was already dead no pulse not breathing nothing that’s what she means by gone
Yea Kataras mum is dead. They just avoided to use this term on Nickelodeon. That also means when katara ran into the tent with her dad she found and saw her murdered corpse. Most likely killed by firebending what means she smelled her pretty too. A burned person smells horribble. She was also pretty young.With that in mind she might be much more traumtaized than sokka. Maybe thats why sokka can side with aang more easy when they discuss it and why katara gets so angry and even kind of attacks sokka.
When sokka said that thier mother was "gone", he didn't mean dissappeared, he meant unalive.

Hama would’ve been proud of her pupil Katara. She used bloodbending against the Fire Nation the way she intended it to be. Not for defense, or as a last resort, but to attack.
