I can't say I was a huge fan of the show FRIENDS I never even bothered to watch the last few seasons but 54 isn't very old and I suppose Mathew is a cautionary tale. He had just recently moved to that location and was probably using the new hot tub often as a form of relaxation since he doesn't use drugs and alcohol as much to relax anymore. He also enjoyed playing pickleball daily but felt tired that day went home to the hot tub and as he was exhausted and perhaps years of stress on his heart from substance abuse my guess is he had a mild heart attack and was too weak to get out of the tub and drowned. Condolences to his family and actual "friends". Those with morbid curiosity will need to wait for the autopsy report if it's released.
