The US government has proposed plans to prohibit the use of key hardware and software from China in new vehicles.
The ban on Chinese-made smart car software and hardware in the American domestic market would hit the EV manufacturer BYD, and some 140 other brands, hard.

Lots of things are imported from China. There must be a real security threat. This holds true for not only Australia, US, all western countries. In fact, 80% of the world are saturated with Chinese imports.
This ranges from cars to motorcycles, to trucks, to ships, to shipping containers, to bicycles, to phones, even your Samsung phone is made in China, even your Apple or iPhone is made in China. Teslas are also made in China. Even sports goods, racquets or shoes, clothes.
So everything from China is a security risk because they insert nano cameras, and spy on everything.
Even the toilet papers in the White House, and all the surrounding streets of the White House, the toilet papers are made from China. And contains nano cameras, and can spy on Joe Biden’s (you know where). And it can spy on all the politicians’ (you know where), and that also holds true in the Australian parliament.
With a hybrid vehicle you have twice the complication of an IC only, or EV only vehicle. When the hybrid's traction battery needs replacing but you can't afford it right now, can you still drive around on just the small IC engine or does the vehicle need BOTH systems operational to be able to be driven ???
Dont buy Chinese or Tesla (assembled in China) Evs then. Stay with Combustion / Diesels cars/trucks. Apple Iphones are also assembled in China. Washing machines, TV, oh..CCTVs too..

For almost 20 years, even earthmoving equipment (manufactured in America and Japan) has been able to be monitored remotely and have adjustments to settings and modes etc while in operation. This includes electronic restrictions to service access to your own equipment, that you bought and own. Capabilities generally have increased, quite significantly since then, for most manufacturers with ongoing advances in technology continuosly, just saying.

BMW, MB, LR , Hyundai , Kia all use OTA updates from systems based in Australia, China don't . They use direct systems linked to & generally based in China. We know of several Chinese brands here with embedded SIM's , which aren't generally listed as a feature of those vehicles for this market. Collecting personal info is done by huge amounts of organisations here & OS but the Chinese seem to require a lot more sensitive information than just about everyone else . It's Part of the compulsory reporting of information back to the CCP & third Party's. Desperation by China to control Australia's motoring by flooding us with cheaply made cars . Labor appear to be totally oblivious to any security issues that these cars obviously present .
It's a legitimate security concern that needs to be addressed, however this applies to all new cars with wifi, not just Chinese cars. America is singling out China because even with a 100% tariff, they still have EV cars that can compete, they are super scared as they can't compete with the superior technology and luxury coming out of China at amazing prices. The US government has given Tesla far more in subsidies than China have given BYD and yet they are still lagging behind BYD. Just have them disable the OTA updates and only allow them to be done at an authorised dealer with every update vetted by our cyber security team, done.

A few years ago USA and Europe were criticizing China not doing enough to reduce CO2 emissions. Now they are saying China solar panel and EV are posting risks. Guess not matter what you do you are always wrong, if they don’t like you. If you have not done something they can hypothetically say they can do this and that. Well it is probably easier for China to deploy ICBM to USA than shutting down the EV.
