Australian defence minister drops hint on British-built submarines for Australia

The Australian Defence Minister Richard Miles did not deny on yesterday’s Afternoon Agenda the country will be receiving British-built submarines before constructing our own nuclear subs, according to Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

“So could we be seeing a couple of British-built sub first, then Australian-made subs make up the posts fleet of eight, we’re putting together the jigsaw puzzle ahead of the AUKUS announcement.” Mr Clennell said.

  1. It sounds like a UK boat would suit us best, my only concern is that it's again a new model that hasn't been built before and we know how that can end up. My question is also, if the US and UK can build a sub within 18-24 months, why would it take 10 years before we can get them?

  2. We will never build nuclear boats in Australia, the cost is too high, no infrastructure, no engineers, and no process to get security clearance for migrant engineers even if they would come. This is going to be another government screw up.

  3. Far more likely we are talking about a rear section built in the UK and a forward section built in Australia. We need time to grow the skill base in Australia, it would make sense for use to progressively increase the Australian content over time as the skill base grows to support it.

  4. I have a basic question: ‘If the UK Submarine is chosen, does that then require the UK Spearfish model torpedo launch system to be replaced in order to fire the US MK-48 Torpedo?
Those with an interest in the Collins’ Class Submarine know exactly what I am a$king. All found on the Public Domain.
    History repeats.

    Spearfish Heavyweight Torpedo
The Spearfish Heavyweight Torpedo is the UK Royal Navy's front line anti-submarine and anti-surface torpedo.

  5. Funny how the french contract was broken primarily because the level of australian manufacturing was consistently being downgraded by the french, and the japanese said they would not allow us to build their design locally. Now we have the british saying they will happily build our boats for us over there? Where are our local manufacturing jobs?

  6. AFAIK the last two Astute class boats are HMS Agamemnon and HMS Agincourt. If they are acquired by Australia, I hope they retain the same names. I think 'Agincourt' would be a lovely nod to the French for their part in the whole submarine thing.
