Australia sending a navy warship to Red Sea will not ‘leave us short’

Australian Strategic Policy Institute Senior Analyst Malcolm Davis says Australia sending a navy warship to the Red Sea would not “leave” the nation short on its defence.

On Thursday, Defence Minister Richard Marles confirmed he was considering sending Australian Navy personnel to assist the US in the Red Sea, with the Coalition urging the government to answer America’s call to deploy a navy warship to the area.

“It doesn’t leave us short in the sense that the Navy has already assured the government that it is capable of sending a warship to the Red Sea and still maintaining its operational requirements here in the Indo-Pacific region,” he told Sky News Australia.

“We have two basic options here, or three basic options really; we can either agree to the request and send a warship to the Red Sea … we can send a warship into the Indo-Pacific to backfill US navy there so that frees up a US navy ship – or we can refuse the request.

“Now if we refuse the request it does not send a strong message of support from Australia to Washington DC at a fairly important time.”

  1. Here we go again the Americans are drawing us into conflict, we do not have the fire power to protect ourselves yet we remain a puppet to what America wants … do you think they are going to be able to help us in a conflict, America has fallen, …"In God We Trust"

  3. According to this bloke’s logic, if America whispers in Australia’s ear that we should go to war with , say Indonesia, then off we go like a good little boy , frightened to upset his father . Sort of sounds like another Ukraine to me , and look how things have gone for them – disregard all the lies and propaganda put out by the very people we are expected to feel obligated to assist . Whilst the current American government is in power ( perhaps the next will be as bad) Australia , together with all other countries, should have nothing to do with them , and if anyone thinks America will save us if a war breaks out , sorry but you have rocks in your head .

  4. Australia, are you in favour of UN's 2-state solution? If not, why? If yes, say no to sending warship which is used to protect Australian shores not Israeli interest. Australians' interest first!

Yeah okay the US want public relations image sorted out because the way the Israelis are going there will be escalation and the Yanks don't want to be SEEN to be the only ones in the Region if and when there's a spike okay that's where the Aussies come in, no training drills in this region okay beware there've got the fourth Largest navy and they want us involved.

  6. Australians need to take military power from Government hands by having put into law that the Government cannot deploy military forces abroad without a refferendum. Australians pay for all aspects of the military and therefore they are owned by the people and should be answerable to the people.

  7. Australia has no role to play in the current conflict we are not a State of America we are a soveriegn nation who should be neutral and not be involved in supplying any naval vessels. I hope the Australian goverment doesn't do what it always does and grovel to America

A land corridor for the delivery of cargo from the Gulf States to Israel through Saudi Arabia and Jordan and back is up and running, with operations increasing during the Israel-Hamas war as alternate sea routes have come under attack, Israeli officials said Wednesday
A month before Oct. 7, the Israeli company, which serves as a “matchmaker” between cargo companies and carrier companies, signed an agreement with the UAE and Bahrain in Manama.
“We had no idea that there would be a war but we envisioned enhancing the land route,” said Fridman.
Fridman declined to specify how many trucks were now running the land route daily

  9. Is it just me, or do we sound a lot like New Zealand right now? One ship…well of course we stand ready to assist in the Red Sea, for how long? *This comment only makes sense if read in an Eric Idle accent. 😉

  10. The Red Sea Route is also closely related to Australia. In addition, if Australia enters into military tensions with China, it will be supported by the U.S. military.

  11. This is a bad time and very critical. On which side is Australian is on, is it on the side of the world or your friend (USA) and when you faced a full face war who will come for ypur help , the world or you only friend USA?. What message is Australian sending to USA in the eyes of world and to the world what message is australia is sending to them. This is not the time you stand in the middle but this is time you chose a side. The world is alread spliting into two parts; The sides of Russia-China vs USA-Britain; the world is in the side of Russia -China a while Australian is try to play a leader role or middleman position. Australia Stands weaken the side of USA-Britain and give strength to Russia-China and the world. What Coward decision by Australian?. I wish Australian went to work with China?
