Australia has 'virtually no international freight ships'

Baird Maritime and Work Boat World Magazine’s Neil Baird discusses Labor’s promise before the election, where they planned to establish a fleet of up to 12 Australian flagged and crewed merchant vessels.

“We virtually have no international freight ships at all,” Mr Baird told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

“The only ships we have operating internationally now are a couple of very small crew ships.”

  1. MUA needs to be abolished immediately then, this makes us very vulnerable here in Australia and it’s only getting worse. Idiot albo has bought 2 new planes hasn’t he, and morris has bought submarines. These idiot men just want fancy toys instead of the essential equipment that our country desperately needs!

  3. We are a sitting duck, an island nation full of resources completely devoud of any protection. Our armed forces are a joke. We have a self gratifying, narcissistic, yellow backed, representation of a prime minister who does not care for the Australian taxpayer.

    WAKE UP AUSTRALIA!!!

  4. Tasmania doesn’t have any issues with ships unless immigrants want to fill them with some sort of shit no one uses anyway because they will just plant up South Africa with crap because Australia doesn’t have the water.

  5. Attacking Australia's shipping lanes would also mean attacking Indonesia's shipping lanes! Hence the security pack Australia just signed with Indonesia! Australia would cut off China's food supply line along with coal, gas and iron ore to say the least! Australia and Indonesia could also respond by attacking China's oil and gas supply line from Iran with the help from India! Then comes trade! America would also cut food supplies to China and introduce crippling sanctions! When the people of China found themselves out of a job with an empty plate the CCP would be finished!

  6. Thing is. Australia would have to import very little if we had some industry .A country without a manufacturing base is doomed the days of ridding on fossil fuel and iron ores back are coming to an end.

  7. The ships are a necessity, but all the things Andrew is talking about we should have some capacity to produce here, especially medical supplies. Jim Molan always spoke about our National fuel reserve, which yet again Labor has allowed to drop even lower that what the LNP had. We have become a stupid country.

  8. It is called cost cutting flashing jobs employing overseas people to do our job's. No jobs in Australia is secured anymore. It doesn't matter if you work for the government private sector or religious groups. Let me tell you that from experience I have been retrenched free times in 42 years of working. My first time working for the RSL in Crows Nest at the age of 17 second year apprenticeship. My third time at the age of 39,40 working as a storm in forklift driver in a warehouse Kleenmaid. That was earned by Mormons. And my third job after 8 1/2 years Amara religious group Wesley Mission. Made redundant about 3 weeks ago. Because people that own these companies around the world that have those companies only think about themselves to get more and more money but don't pay the staff the right amount of money. Are the employees slaves for around the world to work half price. And that will never change because Money Talks more than bulsht. It doesn't matter if you're a labour person like I am or a liberal person. They both talk bulsht. And only look after themselves and their fat cat friends.

  11. Our big island nation actually makes us geographically hard to be invaded as most of the land mass is unhabitable. Invading us is pretty much pointless unless the plan is to get hold of our resources permanently, but that won't be easy. So Australia has decided to fall asleep with its defence.

  12. Mr Baird is correct – investing in any big business in AU won't work. American business folk talk of Australia's sovereign risk (the unions), which in other countries is wars, corruption, bad weather, aggressive military (coups etc), political instability etc. For AU the sovereign risk is extortion by the unions, and rules changing to favour the unions when Labor is in government. When the ALP becomes a minor party, AU might have a chance of reform, but until then, we're an investment backwater.

  13. Australia is Teetering on the edge of complete commercial collapse if anything interupts our supply of critical supplies such as fuel – and who is responsible – the MUA who have made operating Australian flagged ships impossible and the Labour government who support the unions.
