Australia closer to nuclear-powered submarines after 'a lot of wrangling' on Capitol Hill

Sky News Senior Reporter Caroline Marcus says the AUKUS deal for Australia to gain nuclear-powered submarines has passed the US Congress after “a lot of wrangling” on Capitol Hill.

The legislation is now awaiting the signature of US President Joe Biden after the US Congress voted favourably with 310 for to 110 against.

“Democrat majority leader Chuck Schumer said this was a game-changer and will help Australia counter the threat from the Chinese Communist Party,” Ms Marcus told Sky News contributor Gemma Tognini.

“It should mean a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines for Australia.

“The Prime Minister himself said he has spoken to more than one hundred members of Congress in the US, either in person or on the phone, to try and get this past.”

  1. Yet we no closer to having our own nuclear power plant despite the fact we are the 3rd largest producer of uranium in the world, lol no wonder our country is running backasswards under both major parties, they are like a mud flap… shiny on top and shit underneath.

  2. Not really – apparently the President has to give 90 days notice that the sale will not jeopardize US preparedness and Australia may have to guarantee sending in the subs if Taiwan is attacked. I for one do not want our government to agree to joining a war unconditionally to get US subs. They fear that their ability to meet their strategic goals would be compromised without the subs at their disposal. So still a way to go before the plan is executed. They are behind in production of subs for themselves let alone commencement of a new model sub that is planned.

  3. This is beyond ridiculous. Labor are against us having nuclear energy so we can have affordable electricity but they’re spending 380 BILLION DOLLARS on just 3 nuclear subs that we won’t get for years.
