James Joseph Brown was born on May 3, 1933, in Barnwell, South Carolina. Raised in extreme poverty during the Great Depression, Brown’s early years were marred by hardship and instability. His parents separated when he was young, and by the age of six, he was sent to live with his aunt in Augusta, Georgia.
