It is a giant shield volcano that is about 21 kilometers (13 miles) high and has a base that is about 600 kilometers (373 miles) wide. This makes it the largest volcano in the solar system and about three times the height of Mount Everest, which is the highest mountain on Earth. Olympus Mons is thought to have formed over millions of years as lava erupted from a single point and slowly built up the mountain. It is located in the western part of the Tharsis region of Mars, which is a vast, elevated plateau that contains several other large volcanoes.”
