Despite the impossible task Ubisoft Bordeaux were thrown at, they’re clearly trying their best to make a tribute to classic Assassin’s Creed while using tools designed to develop modern Assassin’s Creed; trying harder and more sincerely than anyone has in the past eight years.
What’s reassuring, it’s a game that is not ashamed to be, look, and feel like Assassin’s Creed… to a degree. It’s sure not perfect, and there are issues I have that seemingly can’t be addressed.
Still, for what it is, it met my expectations, and I’m here to observe what it’s doing right, what it’s too shy to show us, and the one thing I knew I would be unhappy with; movement whose sole decision-making is embedded in world-interactions with no input-layer spice. Let’s talk.

I've not heard you mention Basim is you're second favourite character in the series before, I thought I was the only one who loved his character lol. Just out of curiosity, what part do you find the most likeable: Basim or Loki? Or perhaps even the dynamic between the two.
the question im left asking is what is the point of this game? it's not an actual return to ac roots but it's not exactly an rpg like the previous three games. the stealth looks functional but it's not innovative. nobody's gonna be playing for the parkour, and probably the combat either. the story could be good but it's probably gonna lack any original ac nuance, other than that it just seems like the formula for mediocrity.
People literally never learn when hyping up games, I always remain positive but never get excited anymore until I'm playing the game and I like what I'm seeing. Told alot of people on the Internet about cyberpunk and got hate from everyone. I remember for the gameplay trailer people were saying its one of the best games of all time and it hadn't even come out yet!
Been waiting for this video for a loooong time 🙂
Slightly feels like ghost of Tsushima gameplay but without bow. I would love if the game stealth isn't broken like Valhalla and the npc are just sponge Ragdolls that barely give challenge. I feared that since someone pointed out that Valhalla need to be fixed by rooting everything from the core, not just simple patch update. I hope the reason why its separate is because the core script itself need rework.
I'm glad you're talking up how Assassin Focus looks visually, I've seen people complain that it looks too 'mythological' or 'fantastical' when it's very clearly an homage to the sci-fi roots of the franchise; we are in a synthetic mind-box that is replaying memories, and that box has limitations. It's just that we've gone so long without actually seeing those limitations that people will simply assume it's fantasy nonsense, when in reality the Animus is struggling to render what's going on for Basim's immense speed, likely due to his status as reincarnated Isu or something.
I've been looking forward to your video discussing the gameplay, and I'm glad to agree with you on basically everything. Still holding out hope for more advanced movement options, but if we don't get them then it won't be a surprise either.
"if you don't like assassin's creed sci-fi elements, … get better soon" LMAO
13:55–14:18 Exactly😂
what peolpe don't understand is that if they are gonna be toxic and over critic with this game bringing it down we will probably never see a true Assassin's Creed game. I mean, mirage is not perfect, not at all, but considering the resources given to the team and the size of the team itself, they are doing a great work, finally listening to the community of fans. Valhalla was the chapter that sold the most, and if Ubisoft seed that the "roots" of Assassin's Creed don't bring money anymore, than they surely are not going to bring us anything different from that shitty rpg like games. Because they bring damn money in their pockets. So please people, don't be too rude over this title, appreciate the effort and try to make it a valid chapter also for what concern "sellings". Because as i said, this is just an attempt for ubisoft, a step in the direction we want AC to go, but of it will be a false step, we will never get the game we are hoping for
To me this is more of a step in the right direction rather than a true return to form. I like the direction but I wish there was a little bit more ambition to the old formula. I still would take this over Valhalla any day of the week.
thank you for the comment on the aesthetics of assassin focus, so many people bitch about it when we had a magical apple that controls people's minds, we had arno magically instantly morph into an npc as a disguise, but this is where they draw the line apparently
About the parkour…I would say don't expect anything. I think without playing the game itself, we shouldn't make any comments on the parkour. That I think is a fair thing to say. I will only make a decision on the parkour once I actually play the game. Remember that back in the old days too, the gameplay trailers never showed too much complex movement. It was the players who figured that out, which the same goes for AC1. Still to this day people say AC1 parkour is "boring and repetitive and primitive", while it's not that at all. And at the same time, as you said, it's good to be realistic about it cause well, we were wayyy too hyped about Valhalla too lol.
The rest yes, the rest the demo was exactly what I expected too, and I think that is a pretty fair thing to be excited about. Meeting expectations is better than subverting them completely in a way the playerbase does not want or enjoy.
I am so glad you said something about the Assassin's Focus ability. I have seen tons of people hate in it because it's "magic" and I couldn't believe that they were ignoring that it is basically an feature of the Animus. Thank you for keeping a level head, I enjoy watching your content immensely because you make sure to look at things from every angle! You're the best!
Great great video!! I 100% agree with basically every point you said, except for parkour, I'm still quite sad about the parkour, kinda like Jcers' vid. And also thaaank yooouuu for explaining the futuristic sci fi aesthetic choice with multi-kill. I feel like so many people aren't seeing the Animus stylistic choice there!
you sound just like iron pineapple. same person???
6:23 they've shown a pop-up that warns about not being able to remove a piece of equipment, which hints us that some equipment may be removed (if the ui devs are not complete idiots), so who knows, hopefully the upgrades could be removed
The parkour does still disappoint me, but I just have to hope this is a step in the right direction for Ubisoft in understanding what we're looking for
I'm excited for this game, it's a step in the right direction, a great blend of new and old
It's nice to see a YouTuber who doesn't just shit on the games for the sake of shitting on them or simply because the take isn't just "AC II but in Greece".
The teleporting is less satisfying to me then say Ghost of Tsushima watching how fast Jin can move and skillfully takedown targets. Same with the knife throwing animation taking a bit to ramp up, animation can be more or less satisfying.
I will probably buy Mirage and will probably like it, but I already see a lot of stuff I will not like. And let's be honest, sped up animations or not, he still runs and jumps like some heavy, fur-covered fantasy barbarian as they depicted vikings. And I'm a bit scared that it will just totally flop because they didn't were ready to really invest that much in it and didn't gave it that much time and just reused Valhalla-animations and stuff which don't really suit a traditional AC and when it does they will just say "Well, seems like people didn't want a traditional AC after all". I'm not aversed to the idea of reusing stuff per se, I think it can be a great way for devs to focus on other stuff, but in this case it might just not be the right template to use.
W Leo take, cant wait to play mirage.
You always have a good perspective, the game is actually good.
I'm desensitized to Assassin Focus after all the stuff I saw in Origins, Odyssey & Valhalla. Criticism may be valid, but it should be the least of our worries.

Don’t hate me, but I absolutely hated the gameplay walkthrough. It is NOT a return to roots in any way. The final nail in the coffin was the fact that Basim TELEPORTS during the multi kill mechanic. Arkham Knight had it figured out years ago, but AC just makes the dude teleport… I’m so done with this bullshit.
Love your videos so very in depth bro
Am I the only one feeling overjoyed just because Leo k also knows Kylar Stern🙂
the thing that I don't like is that when Basim air assassinate or ledge assassinate, they always move the camera instead of the players moving their analog to see from many point of view, or maybe they could just make another button like contextual camera in ac 2 for us too see the enemy getting air assassinated like we see the impact of jumping on somebody instead of weird angle where we cant see the person getting jumped , even in ac 2 sometimes high profile assassination have some good camera angle for us to see how Ezio stab the enemy in many various ways. But that is just my opinion, and great video Mentor!
Make a discord for god sake
I agree with all of this, but the Assassin Focus ability doesn't look like Basim is just being sped up. When he teleports, the ground around him is affected by it in a way that it shouldn't be if the animus was just skipping through Basim running to his next target. Regardless of whatever lore they come up with to justify it (you could be right btw, I haven't really followed all the news) the ability was designed to look like teleporting and so I think people who are upset with that have a valid point. Plus if we want to get into lore (not my most knowledgeable area), why would the animus only speed up these kills and not every other one? Why can't Basim just teleport everywhere to save Layla time? Yeah it's nitpicky but I think if you're going to come up with lore to justify why your character can effectively teleport then you need to come up with a justification for why they don't just always do that otherwise it's less of a justification and more of an excuse than anything. Though admittedly I could just be missing something, that's pretty common too lol.
One thing I can tell about Mirage, that I haven't felt in a good number of entries, is the dev team give a shit about those old games and the players desire for the Assassin fantasy. In more recent entires, we've been given the tools of an assassin, but the tools play second fiddle to Viking and Spartan fantasy, and don't make any sense for those player characters.

When he grabs that pole he uses it to swing but notice the tarp t the left. He could just as easily swing to the other side as he could climb up the pole and jump to the tarp.
They are using the overly simplistic parkour mechanics to the best of their abilities by creating a world that allows for you to make your own choices.
So while I don’t expect to have side or back ejecting, I do think transversal throughout the city will still be fresh. Also 3:51 you can see basim drop down allowing for the player to make their character move up and down while free running. So while the parkour wont be as deep as the ezio games, it will still be fun and refreshing. At least compared to the last three entries we have had.
One thing I think would make the game feel me like a creed game is if they put the running assassination like in unity into this game
It's such a weird thing, but I didn't know back and side ejects existed until RPG AC's were well established already. I know there were challenge tombs in ACII that encouraged it, but beyond that, the old games never found other ways to encourage elaborate movement. It was just an option.
Revisiting the series knowing back and side ejects exist did make it more fun and made me wish that movement could come back in modern AC games, but eh again, at least Ubisoft has finally woken up to the fact that we've all been hungry for a return to form.
Despite looking and feeling like RPG AC, Mirage is shaping up to be a good way to meld old and new together, even if a few key elements are sacrificed. We'll always have the old games for that counter based combat and the more elaborate parkour system. I will be cautiously optimistic for this one.
This isn’t in defense of Ubi’s decisions for AC, but I don’t think it’s totally fair just yet to judge the system based on a dev’s play through. After all, the complexity and nuance in the original Ezio trilogy and AC Unity’s parkour system was really only found by the players. And never really shown off/fully explained by devs.
As for the multi kill, it is kind of jarring to have that sci-fi/mystical aesthetic occur when Basim could easily just be moving fast between targets ala Arkham Knight's multi-takedown. The return to roots should also mean having the simulation itself be rooted more in reality again, but again, gotta hand it to Ubisoft for trying lol.
Man, I wish you were more popular, almost every video I see about assassin's creed mirage it's about loving everything Ubisoft show and hyping for everything and skipping the flaws or directly hating it all without any reason more than their own biased opinion. you're the balance, saying things as they are and talking about the game having all in consideration and being fair
You can see how the Devs are truly passionate about their projects despite the limitations they have, but I can almost envision Ubisoft higher ups holding a gun on their heads, making their lives a living hell, not giving them time to innovate and forcing them to follow the same formulae, I've met some of the Devs at Ubisoft, these guys are no joke, if given the time they can truly create something magical with this franchise.
I hope there’s an option to reduce HUD elements for maximum immersion!
The only thing that bugs me with “that” ability is that air assassination from a rope that would be impossible even for Arno
I wouldn't actually say that side and back ejects are not here since it was present in valhalla so it is likely in here too…its just that the trailers wont show such complex action and that we have to discover such things once the game releases!
amazing video as always brother
13:54 my favourite part 😂 I agree completely!
