As Spain’s flood death toll rises, authorities under fire for warning system failure | DW News

The death toll from flash flooding in Spain has risen to 155. This, as the country begins three days of mourning. On Thursday Spain’s King Felipe warned that the emergency is not over yet. The eastern regions of Murcia and Valencia were hit the hardest. The region saw heavy rain after a ‘cold drop’ triggered huge storms. Cold drops are when a cold Atlantic low-pressure system collides with warm Mediterranean air. We spoke to DW Correspondent Jan-Philip Scholz on the ground in Valencia, to Hanna Cloke, professor of Hydrology at the University of Reading, and to DW’s Chief Climate Reporter Louise Osborne.

  1. No warnings like the Ahrtall in Germany. The most help came from the people themselves from Germany. Al lot of farmers were helping. In the beginning there were politicians talking about the climate change. There after there was not a lot of help. The insurance companies did nt pay all the damage till now. In the Netherlands there were problems with warningsystems again last year. We were lucky because there was no flood yet.

  2. This is nothing compared to the floods in Valencia a century ago. No mention of that because it does not feed into the "climate change" narrative. Note that the city of Valencia after the floods decades ago diverted the rivers. The actual city did not flood, just outside it.

  3. In my country Czechia we had big flooding in September. But thankfully goverment and official forcast were from beginning saying it will be catastrophic flooding, comparable to two previous truly bad floods. Get prepared, do not underestimate this. It is coming. We will be happy if the prognosis won't come through. But get prepared in case they do!
And we had just few fatalities(2 of them were evacuated prior to the flood-then mid-flood returned to their home!).
Clearly same did not happen in Spain.

  4. It was a surprise for everyone! It’s typical to blame public officials in these circumstances, but given how quickly the disaster spread, and how unprecedented the event was, little could have been done. The real test is in the clean up but that too takes time.

  5. Las alarmas no fallaron , saltaron en los teléfonos, el problema es que fue muy rápido y pasó en una hora muy concurrente de tráfico, personas trabajando etc etc , y nadie pensamos que iba a ser tan grave 😢

  7. The warnings did not come in time, the radar that farmers use to check the weather was not working, even a farmer posted a video reporting it after failing to get hold of the relevant authorities to sort it out, all this a week before.. This is a massive failure from the government in Valencia to warn their population…

  8. I am from Valencia. And yes, the final advise by mobile phone arrived late. BUT, and it is a big BUT, there was a RED ALERT by AEMET (the Spanish national meteorological service) since the first hours of the 29th October. And sadly most people don't care about those serious warnings. I was at home, looking on TV how the rain developed on the inner cities, at the head of those rivers, and how the flow increased extremely on those rivers and, finally, the worst happened. So it is VERY IMPORTANT to take the warnings seriously. There is a free APP by AEMET which informs in real time of those things. But of course, it is not compulsory to have it installed. And even less to take the alerts seriously. We all need to learn from this, as it should never happen again. R.I.P. all the victims ❤‍🩹

  9. I was in the area, this was not a normal storm. It was stationary above the area and with heavy rainfall erupting randomly and locally without warning, the meteo services had a very hard time predicting ! It did not follow the typical type of storm we usually have in the area

  10. Because our politicians are too busy with they power games. Tuesday evening with people still drowning, the central socialist government run to blame the local right wing government and vice versa. Anything but help.

  11. The polititans have abandoned the citizens in purpose. This area has always suffered floods recorded since Roman times. The last big flood was in 1957 and caused at least 300 casualties. You can only compare how General Franco dealt with the situation, even if he was a dictator. There are videos reporting what happened from that time and the army was deployed from day one, food, clothes, medicines, housing were provided and after that he constructed a big channel to change the course of the river that used to go inside Valencia. Thanks to this construction we are not now talking about thousands of deaths. Now Nato is using this tragedy to impulse their diabolic agenda. There have destroyed more than 200 dams in Spain in a few years. Protecting Fish is more important than protecting human beings.

  13. Thanks for doc. In effect climate change is more than a fact, is a consequence of alteration of nature. Society today is sick by mental illness, and planet too. Scientifics and echologists are advising that 30 years ago…Irrationality demands to pay. Respect spanish politicians I prefer not to comment. They don't deserve it. Salutes frm Spain.

  14. Another flash flooding, in the exact same area in Valencia, took place in 50s, circa 70 years ago. Flooding is a natural event that used to happen before the climate change, too… just saying. Climate change driven or not, it's not that relevant… the only relevant point is that a lot of lessons about careless behaviour, complacency, etc need to be learnt after hundreds of people died last week in Valencia. Because unfortunately last week, although the flooding event was known to the civil protection and the meteorological institute the day before, well in advance, the first warning was given 2 HOURS AFTER the flooding had occurred.

  15. Check the incredible footage this natural catastrophe has left.

Flash flooding from storms inundated villages and piled vehicles into narrow streets in Spain's Valencia region, killing dozens of people, mud-filled roads damaged towns, and people being rescued from flooded homes.Check the incredible footage this natural catastrophe has left.

  16. In spain some people have a very strange way of thinking. To give you an example many year ago a famous bull fighter was badly hurt by a bull. He needed to be taken to the hospital. They took him in a back of ambulance to a hospital a few hours away and he died before reaching the place. That kind of emergency required an helicopter. The bull fighter name was Paqurri.

  17. This was not the worse flood in this century. There were at least 2 other one same and worse. President Sanchez was not able to get in to the towns because people were throwing stones and eggs. Politicians as usual failed to help. It was not even raining and the water came in all of the sudden. This has happened before and it's not cause by CC. If they stopped fumigating … we would not see this. Stop with the bs
