If only you would review "Ashes 2063", "Ashes 2063: Dead Man Walking" and "Ashes 2063: Afterglow"…
Love this game, it's a shame no one's heard anything from the dev since last year; would be awesome to get a sequel or a new episode as DLC, hopefully they're just busy working on their next project.
I think I agree with everything you said in the review, it's rough around the edges in a lot of places, but the game is just so much fun it's easy to overlook. I do disagree slightly on the menus though, they probably are a little cluttered but I never had any issue finding what I was looking for, and I thought they were stunning compared to the basic menus we get in most games, reminded me the presentation in classics like HoMM3.
It will swallow your soul
I get that there's an aesthetic there but like can we can we maybe get like I don't know.. like early cell phone levels of frame rate for the animations in the Boomer shooter revivals to go with you know the 4000 frames per second that the game is running at.. like can we just you know like you don't even have to do it yourself the computer can do it for you LOL it's called interpolation, and that's not even bringing into account all these AI programs that could actually do it really well without you even having to touch it.. I want to like this but at the same time I'm like bro.. two frame animation is not a feature, otherwise good God you've got some issues with nostalgia.. complicated ones too because 400 frames per second LOL you didn't have that back in the day..
I get it Sprite work is complicated it's hard but you know what it's it's actually really not that hard to get to 15 maybe, we're not even accounting for perspective here we're just doing we're just doing you know enough to like pretend like it's fluid motion.. good God even even getting enough frames in there so the interpolation could just match the frame rate LOL but that would be that might anger the nostalgic gods that think games look better in 240p.. but at least those people try to do it on error appropriate hardware at 15 frames a second damn it, they're fully committed.. and a lot of them really really into Nintendo for some reason, no correlation there I'm sure.. but for all the rest of you doing the Sprite Boomer shooter thing, meet me halfway and do a solid pen maybe and then I can mod the interpolation in as long as you don't use unity or unreal on which I can no longer do anything because both those engines are hot garbage through and through, and it seems like a core feature of both is the complete and utter brick wall to the actual user, even on a basic settings level never mind mod support.. looking at you new blood looking at you very specifically New blood..
Not a fan a building these things to be these bespoke prisms of the past but without some of the genuinely like entire industry altering components that made them what they were with user mobility and customization.. actually don't know what this is but it seems like most of these Sprite boomers are done on unity or something and.. that's something to be ashamed of entirely LOL, now if you're working with gz Doom, take it all back a glorious engine for glorious games that actually came from and is of at the very least the core philosophy of the carmack way.. which is why I'm looking once again at you New blood.. feel free to live up to the namesake that you seem to want to take credit for anytime soon now…
Great game but i remember i got annoying fps drops on good machine when the game released
I've been waiting since 2012 for somebody to do a medieval hack and slash single player game with chivalry's combat.. my god I've been waiting so long, to the point now where if I don't see it I get very bitter.. especially if they try something in another direction that's completely antithetical.. and somehow think it's a feature, not saying this is that this is different.. and honestly it's probably better than most, but that's just cuz the bar is so stupidly low.. the fact that you actually have agency over your inputs is going to put it on a higher pedestal then the last decade or so of hack and slashes.. now I'd love another dark Messiah.. dark Messiah was chivalry sword play my God that would be perfect.. but I'll just can we just do the chivalry thing and I'll be happy LOL it's such a good system it's so brilliant, it just works LOL, and better than pretty much every other melee system out there.. and yet outside of its own sphere of influence with spin-offs.. and one horribly disastrous attempt to consolise it regarding kingdom come.. which butchered its own game played by taking away camera control LOL trying to have its cake and eating it too and making it awkward in the first place.. props for trying though cuz you know I would normally be harsher on it when they went that far and knee capped it the rest of the way but at the same time lol at least you had to strategically play a rhythm game..
I remember when chivalry came out we were like this is the future everything's going to have this this is this is amazing.. like even the bots were fun to fight cuz of the system, and certainly significant improvement over your average melee single player interactions even if it couldn't possibly compare to a human player.. but.. well I'm still waiting.. and it looks like it's getting worse if calista protocol is anything to go by.
This one looks like an absolute treat! Love those crunchy gib sounds. Will definitely have to pick this up.
I played the demo of this hack n' slash last year, deserves more attention.
Cool art direction, reminds me a bit of Blood.
So, it's Witchaven, right? Not an exact remake, but the art style, the combat, the weapon degradation system. It's like this team asked themselves "what if Witchaven were good?"
Oh man, this one calls to me.
I ADORED the winter and wood themed levels of Hedon, probably because they take me back to my Amiga 500 period ^^. Ah…. and to see it done here so well…
I can only hope it gets released on GoG as well! If not, Steam it is.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention, Kirk!
4:53 Before throwing that hand grenade I hoped you counted to three, no more, no less.
Looks like witchaven if effort had actually been put into it
Those interior environments remind me of the first two Thief games, oddly enough.
Soooo glad you did this one. Ive finished it once. Gonna do new game plus soonish
I'd get this on sale but it doesn't go on sale.
this game runs worse than doom eternal on my pc
Really good game. Not exactly a new game, but still highly recommended. The only gripes i have is 1) the UI is shit and 2) the framerate dips. Granted, my gpu is what it is, but otherwise i have a good system. 12900KF (~13900K clocks, except e-cores 4,0Ghz), high speed DDR5 and NVME-drives. Performance overall is just highly inconsistent. Sort of like with brutal doom, something about the layers of blood, be it sprites/textures/decals (not sure what those are) tanks performance with that game. Not sure what is it about with Arhurian Legends though.
This is one of the games I had most fun playing through. It’s awesome, the sound design is great, the visuals and immersion too even if some outside levels are not as good as the interiors. The content in terms of arsenal and inventory bring a lot of ways to deal with the enemies. The variety of the enemies is also great with regular soldiers, knights and tougher creatures like the undead.
As a fan of medieval games and FPS, this is a must play. There are not so many games like this one.
In terms of technics, it works fine, I had only one clipping glitch with a door. I’m satisfied because it plays well from start to finish, not like witchaven which have similar style, but is so bugged.
I have to agree this is a Gem, I am having a fun time paying it.
I wonder how complicated it would be to start replacing the Sprite assets with 3D assets? The world is super fully realized in three dimensions for the most part, especially the castles interiors and whatnot.. you could start with just replicating the in-game animation stages, do a procedural animation interpolation, and just see how that looks altogether.. I've seen people put together really good animation sets with even fewer frames than the sprites are at.. it's kind of impressive how little keyframing you need any more if you embrace the right kinds of mathematical interpolation.. and that would just be to see what it would look like, and you could leave the level design the same and just you know kind of work as you go.. hopefully the mod support I was complaining about(1)… Is like an actual thing or at least you know if not support the actual ability depending on what the engine is of course.. I really hope it's a thing, cuz you can do a lot of cool stuff with the framework.. different takes on things different modes different Sprite work etc.. it's kind of like going back to the old days where it wasn't really so out of reach to modify given the Fidelity Target.. which is kind of cool I don't know if it's thing I don't know.. but for some reason just looking at all this I'm like seeing the three dimensions in the level design.. and you're kind of right yeah the sprite's kind of feel out of place.. and I feel like it's maybe the other way around as in the place feels out of sprite or something.. a lot of people we're going to totally dig this aesthetic too and obviously the creators do.. but I'm curious to see what it would do, both on a game play and having that third dimension to deal with like the measurement of hit registration and scalability or and you know just as a jumping off point.. it's one of the cool things about a game that puts together good systems, changing out the assets and modifying things as you go is a much less daunting affair, and definitely something I wouldn't ask of them as developers.. but definitely something I would want to do myself.
(1) (looking at you New blood, guess nothing's new and it's 10:00 already in the morning… So that's 2 hours plus I don't know your entire existence so far.. well there's always 11, noon lunch supper.. tomorrow.. anytime will do to start actually living up to that prestige you take credit for.. next week? Hell next year… Anytime is a good time to start… Funny I am. Probably not going to stay up waiting but.. that don't mean I won't occasionally be shaming 🙂
Love this game. My only faults with it are that sometimes it loads an empty game world and I usually stop playing for awhile after that (because restarting doesn't always work right off), and there are some Hindu/Indian cultural artifacts/art in it that make absolutely zero sense. Like, an inexcusable and awkward inclusion to have "pagan shrines" from an entirely different culture… like, I get they needed stone statues of gods, but come on. That is clearly out of place. Did they really expect no one would notice?
But an absolutely brilliant game. Lots of passion. Not a "I'll never uninstall this", but not a bad time either. Definitely up there and the amount of options for combat is imaginative and exceeds expectations honestly.
awesome game, played through it two and a half times which I usually never do
he had so much fun with his mideval puns at the beginning there
8:10 was the boomer shooter ever linear tho? those levels were PLACES. duke nukem was never linear
The art style looks cool.
I played through the story campaign of this game on my channel and I really like the game! Finally someone else is covering this game with a proper review. Not even Civvie or GmanLives has made a review of this game yet and I think it should get all the attention and praise it deserves.
Looks like Heretic, minus the supernatural weapons and with a focus on physical combat.
EDIT: And with far cringier dialogue.
Dude! Thank you so much for this review! Never heard of this one before even though I'm a boomer shooter fanatic. This looks like a modern Witchaven… but good! The pinnacle of entertainment software!
Holy shit how did this fly under my radar. Gonna play now
Combat looks super stiff
Wow! How did I not know about this one. Your video just sold me, and I'm going to buy it as we speak. Thank you sire.
Man, I loved this game. I agree it's a bit rough around the edges but for $12 you really can't go wrong! Thanks for putting this review out, definitely made my day!
This was easily and by far my favourite game of 2021. It's a crime that it isn't celebrated more as, despite its minor flaws, I had so much fun from start to finish and it just oozes atmosphere and soul. I'm glad to finally see it get much needed attention. The dev is a recluse and is impossible to reach but I really hope he wasn't discouraged by the low sales as it's clear he has a perfect sense of what is fun.
The slowdown and stutter that people tend to see in this game are just a problem with the engine, unfortunately. It's kind of an experimental engine that wasn't really designed for this sort of thing, by my understanding. I like to think that the developer was so committed to capturing the 90s 3D Realms FPS experience that they chose to use an engine that's every bit as janky-yet-charming as the Build Engine.
I know the dev has been out of contact for a year or so, but on the off chance they see this I love this game, I hope they're doing alright and I can't wait to see what they're working on next!

4:53 – One, Two, Five!
I love this game and appreciate the reminder to go back to it. I quit when my quicksaves kept getting corrupt, planning to come back to it after some patches, surely its fixed by now?
I want to love this, as almost every element is right up my ally, but the performance and options are absolutely awful. Maybe I'm spoiled where most games like this can run well beyond the 144hz my monitor can output, but the fact it generally runs at about 55-65fps makes it feel laggy. A real shame as it is so damn cool outside of the performance, but as I get older the less forgiving I am of games that run poor.
" 'Tis time to chew smoked gammon and kick Saxon arses, and they have exhausted all the gammon."
its criminal how little attention this game got, speaking of which review ashes 2063 and amc tc at they are better than most boomer shooter games and they are free standalone mods.
Back when this came out little over a year ago I was telling people that they needed to play Arthurian Legends and to this day I bloody well stand by that opinion. I'm glad it's still getting attention, one of the stand out games of the boomshoot era.
Hey Kirk,
I think the cross hair goes red whenever your in range to attack!
The look of this game, makes me wish there was cheats for Lands of Lore 2&3, so i could play through those two old pre-2000 games with little to no care, and just have a good time. But sadly. Not to be.
maps looks like minecraft, lol
