Painting at night is difficult and problematic, so why have so many great artists taken on the challenge? Waldemar Januszczak celebrates the nocturnal art of Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Velazquez, Hopper and Magritte as he explores art’s edgy relationship with the night and tries to discover why the dark adds so much extra drama and mystery to art.

Hopper's rail station @ min. 27 looks to me like the house from "Giant".
I love art. And I love how Waldemar showcases art artists movements etc on his program. Better than any art class ever.
Excellent work 🥇
Spectacular.!
Mostly about him, not the art. Just try and find a complete painting here. Many of his conjectures are absurd projections of his own psyche.
Hypnotic!

Him: * does *
Amazing! He is so witty!
Thanks.
I love this guy!
Waldemar is just the best, I wished he had 1000 more shows on the impressionist, and the Bible, I personally think he is a Christian. God bless you W!!!!
Imagine if you died right now, where would your soul go for eternity?🌈Was everything you ever did without purpose and never really mattered, or will you just stop existing after your heart beats for the last time? Think about this, it is the most important question of your life. There is only one chance to get it right, and it is in this lifetime. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. Heaven is real, place of eternal bliss. Hell is real, place of eternal torment. You're gonna spend eternity in one of those places. God's will is, that nobody would perish. One day every single one of us has to stand before the Holy Righteous God to be judged, and to give an account how we have lived our life. The only way to get to Heaven is if you are without sin, and every single one of us has sinned. That is why God in His love and mercy sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to atone for our sins. He left Heaven’s Throne, was God in flesh, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, lived a holy perfect sinless life, was condemned unjustly to death while being innocent, was beaten, mocked, flogged, and crucified on the cross, and gave up His life and Blood willingly on our behalf, for there is no forgiveness of sins without the shedding of blood, but Christ, the spotless and unblemished Lamb of God, the Perfect Sacrifice once and for all, died for us, so we may be forgiven of all our sins, and be redeemed back to God, after the fall in Paradise by satan's tempting, through the Holy Precious Blood, which Jesus shed on the middle cross at Calvary, in His everlasting love towards every single one of us.
If you truly repent and ask for forgiveness of your sins from Jesus Christ, and believe with all your heart, that Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, was crucified, died on the cross, was buried, rose from the dead by God’s power on the third day according to the Scriptures, and by faith receive Him as your Lord and Savior, through the Royal Blood of Jesus Christ you will be saved, and are born again of the Holy Spirit. Every sin that weighs you down, even the ones you never dare to speak of, will be forgiven. Repent, believe, follow Christ, and you will spend eternity in Heaven with our Holy King, where is no more death, sorrow, pain nor crying.
John 3:16 BIBLE – For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son (Jesus Christ), that whoever believes in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 14:6 BIBLE – Jesus said unto him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father (to Heaven) except through Me.“
Book of Acts 4:12 BIBLE – Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under Heaven given among men (only Jesus Christ), whereby we must be saved.
Romans 10:9-10 BIBLE – That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart, that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:13 BIBLE – For whosoever shall call upon the name of the LORD (Jesus Christ), shall be saved.
Romans 8:1-2 BIBLE – Therefore, there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus (born again of the Holy Spirit), who walk not after the flesh, but after the (Holy) Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
1 Timothy 2:5 BIBLE – For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:8-9 BIBLE – For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Isaiah 1:18 BIBLE – Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
John 10:10 BIBLE – (Jesus said:) “The thief (satan) cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.“
1 Peter 5:8 BIBLE – Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.
Ephesians 6:12 BIBLE – For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
I've been trying to track this one down for a few years now! Thank you so much!
in my mind darkness in art is really more about light or the emphasising of light….. if you look at a truly dark painting your eyes will be automatically drawn to the light part no matter how small or faint!!
Great doc. Ima big fan of your work…But the way you say “broad” is hilarious sir. Thanks for the chuckle.
The biggest problem for werewolves? Luna-ticks!
I love your docs, but one question: how is the woman in Nighthawks eating a sandwich? I found the largest online image, and best I can tell, she's holding either a matchbook or a sugar packet. Whatever it is, it certainly isn't a sandwich.
I think the cover of Brautigan's "The Hawkline Monster" was inspired by Hopper's "House by the Railroad."
Luke clearly stated that Mary wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger (animal feeding trough) because there was no guest rooms available (full because of Caesarean decree). Matthew telling of the Magi visit makes no mention of His birth only that He and His family were in a house (sometime after his birth). That said, he does make a wonderful point about the night. Love his take on night time and it's affect on art. (edited for clarity)
Trains are human's first pervasive vision of the unlimited power promised by technology. People who had no other experience of powered mechanisms could experience the steam locomotive. It's speeding through the night from places you've never been, and into a future you'll never comprehend.
These are great art documentaries, although they all have one consistent failing, which is the addition of really terrible music tracks. The music is either irritating or silly or stupid or bothersome or just really bad, as in this one. The addition of poorly considered music tracks is unnecessary and detracts from the high quality of the art commentary.
I love your down to earth presentation, no elitist terms drooling from your mouth, No smirks of superiority like you have 'to dumb it down for the folks'! No anti-religious hatred and bigotry aimed at the sensitive subject and the art it inspired. Love how you read the Bible without disdain and mockery. A breath of fresh air. You just all-round rock!
Wee baby Jesus glowed in the dark thats amazing.
Knowing Monet as a bit of a dandy, I cannot imagine he was awake at 4am to paint the sunrise.
Love this guy – just started watching him when I viewed the Holbein documentary. Great style of presentation.
Stunning piece of work, as always. How lucky we are to have this series from Waldemar!
It's no longer believed Van Gogh killed himself.
I love his videos
This series is great. it is Waldwemars art. His expression. I Don't agree with a lot of what he's saying. I do agree with most of it though. What do I know? What does any of us know.?We are all pushing and this series is a great help. An extra bag of coal. Thanks Waldermar.
A philosopher and an artist went into a tavern, and one of them had a drink. ✌
You are one of a kind.
So informative, so intelligent, so funny at times and so able to relate the artist's work to the times and politics.
Now, at 78, I understand the importance of impressionism and also the incredible life and art of Van Gogh and always know that I am not wasting any time seing your videos and listening to you, sometimes many times over again, so that I really understand the different art periods and what initiated thm. I took art history as part of my degree program in 1987, but little did I know and understand until decades later with your 5 star presentations.
Thank you for your genius.
