In the first level of Doom 3, Mars City serves as a narrative introduction and tutorial for the player, who arrives as a new marine at the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC) Mars base. This unique level stands out as the only one in the game without enemies or weapons, focusing instead on establishing the game’s storyline and setting.

The marine begins by navigating through various areas of Mars City, including the Security Checkpoint, Reception, and Marine Command. During this initial exploration, key characters are introduced, such as Counselor Elliot Swann and his bodyguard Jack Campbell, who are investigating Dr. Malcolm Betruger’s controversial research4. Sergeant Kelly gives the marine their first mission: to locate a missing scientist named Jonathan Ishii.

The level’s narrative subtly hints at the impending demonic invasion, with characters like M. Caseon warning the marine not to trust anyone and hinting at the underlying tension. The player receives their PDA, follows a sentry bot, and prepares to descend into the Mars City Underground, setting the stage for the catastrophic events that will unfold in subsequent levels.

The lore of Doom and its expansions, including TNT: Evilution, is centered around the UAC (Union Aerospace Corporation), a powerful and secretive organization that conducts research in various fields, including teleportation and advanced weapons development. In TNT: Evilution, the UAC has established a research facility on Mars, where they are conducting experiments in teleportation. However, something goes wrong, and the experiments open a gateway to Hell, releasing an army of demons and other monsters onto the Mars base.

The player takes on the role of a space marine, known as the Doomguy, who is sent to the Mars base to investigate the disturbance. As they progress through the levels, they encounter hordes of demons and other monsters, including imps, cacodemons, and hell knights. The player must fight their way through the base, navigating maze-like corridors and industrial complexes, to reach the exit and progress to the next level.
Throughout the game, the player discovers clues and messages that hint at the UAC’s experiments and the true nature of the forces they have unleashed. The player must ultimately confront the source of the invasion and stop it from spreading to Earth.

Why does Doom 3 suck so good? It still looks amazing 19 years later. In this game play I got BFG pretty early. So, final question – Is DOOM 3 BFG Edition WORSE Than The Original?! Let’s find out!
