Army’s new lethal Truck mounted loitering ammunition

Indian Army has recently released an RFI for the procurement of 10 sets of aerial targeting system of extended range along with 120 loiter munitions. These systems will be procured under ‘Buy Indian’ & Fast Track Procedure in accordance with DAP-2020. Since this requirement is under fast track, their acquisition could be expected within one year. Though the order is very small but Indian Army seems to have started the much-needed modernization.

Components

The 10 set of Arial targeting system which is part of the requirement is going to have 3 components – control station, forward control station and an antenna. The control station will be fitted on the launcher vehicle for carrying out mission planning, allocation of munition to forward control station and target selection, mission planning, controlling munition system and their recovery and guide the munition to the target.

The forward control station will not be fitted on vehicle but will be a handheld device to take control of munition once launched. It can also guide the munition to target.

The antenna will be used for communication up to a range of 100 km. This will enable communication between onboard communication system on launcher vehicle and munition system. It will also aid in communication between forward control station and munition system up to a minimum range of 5 KM.

Launch platform and loitering ammunition

The Launcher vehicle will be a 7.5-ton 4X4 GS Vehicle such as Ashoka Leyland Stallion modified for fitting cannister/towing launcher, on board command, control & communication stations, and power supply. The vehicle should be capable of launching projectile in autonomous mode.

The loitering munition will have minimum 100 km range with minimum accuracy of 2m CEP. The loitering munition can carry High Explosive Pre-Fragmented warhead or an anti-armour warhead with minimum weight of 8 kg. The loitering ammunition will be able to loiter at a minimum altitude of 300 m.

  2. Nagastra series of Loitering Munition. EEL – launched its Nagastra series of loitering munitions. Nagastra3 meets the requirements.

Nagastra2 & Nagastra3 has also been tested in Ladakh in March 2022.
Nagastra 3 is a Vehicle mounted tube / cassette launched Loiter Munition (LM-2) that can carry
5-10 kg warheads to a range of 40-100km.

  3. How do you make any equipment more lethal??

Answer – put a loitering munitions on it..

Future is very bright for kamikaze strikes, with loitering munitions India must also consider its anti-loitering munitions systems too..(same as Anti-Drone Systems but more accurate and better lethality, kind of like iron dome for loitering munitions)
