Armed police officer runs for his life as gunman confronts him during home arrest

An armed police officer thought he was going to die as he was confronted by a gunman pointing a handgun at him, a court heard. The officer shot Reed Wischhusen, 32, three times as he rushed towards him with the firearm held aloft. Police officers had gone to Wischhusen’s dirty and smelly house that he shared with his father in Wick St Lawrence, north Somerset, in November last year following reports about him converting blank firearms. Four officers – two neighbour officers and two armed officers – carried out a brief examination of the semi-detached property, which was cluttered, dirty and smelled of urine, and found several weapons, as well as body armour and a deactivated hand grenade.

  1. I really feel for the officers involved in this recent incident. The man is clearly mentally disturbed. He looks to me as if he may be Autistic. I have high functioning Autism and can often tell by how a person acts that they are on the spectrum too. Regardless of his mental state, he, like me, and thousands of others with mental illnesses and conditions like Autism, knew right from wrong. I say this because of his 'fantasies'. Some people on the spectrum who have not been properly supported, wind up living in an isolated world of their own, where they conjure up these fantasies. Most of the time it's harmless, but if it involves possessing firearms and threatening to use them against other people, they must be held to account like anyone else. I think his mission was to suicide by cop, which thankfully for the officer involved, he did not succeed. He now has to face the consequences of his actions, and rightfully so.

The armed officer had no choice other than to shoot him. He came running down the stairs with a gun pointed at them after a shot was fired by him trying to kill himself in the bathroom. Armed officers hope they never have to discharge their weapon. This man left them with no choice. I hope the officer involved is ok. Thankfully there was no loss of life, could have been much worse.

  3. In the US it is standard procedure to hand cuff individuals while detained and during the investigation. The man would have to pee in his pants, the officers will never let him out of their site.
