  1. I think OW just doesn’t suit being a free game lol and that’s why we’re all starting to feel burnt out with the content. The new characters don’t even get a free legendary anymore and they lack customisation which doesn’t help hype. I also think Hazard and his design are bland which is partly why this season’s new addition isn’t hitting as hard as it could.

  2. The devs have kinda just pushed themselves against a wall by making both a play test of the new heroes and dropping them straight into competitive on release
    New heroes should almost certainly have a week or two outside or comp so players can learn them and the devs get more accurate data than just 2 or 3 days
    They should bring back having heroes locked for the first few weeks so players can learn the hero and we can get an accurate measure on where the character is at

  3. I think the hero testfire weekends are necessary for new character development, regardless of if you like them or not. The data the devs get is extremely valuable for getting the new character off on the right foot at the start of a season. I think your cynicism stems from both season 12 and season 13 being not that good content wise. Sure the anniversary event was nice, but clash was a mistake, the map revisions were meh at best, the new maps were clash maps, the new Halloween mode this year was eh (it was fun but also reminded players of the single player campaign that was scrapped at the last second), and the mythic weapons being brought into existence by the Eldritch entities that decide what's considered "good business practices…"

  4. My biggest issue is that they use the hero trials as a valid reason to drop the new characters straight into comp upon release. It isn’t necessarily a matter of balance as it is the fact that nobody gets a chance to play as or against the character for nearly long enough for it to be fair. I remember my first day of playing hazard in comp I absolutely dominated because nobody had really played much against him yet. Likewise when I would play against hazard at the start of the season I would get absolutely rolled because my team had no idea how to deal with him yet. As the days have gone on people have figured out what his deal is, but that should have been when he was locked to quick play only and not for a whole week of competitive.

I think the second, "real" release would hit a lot harder if we got real, 5+ minute cinematics to launch them with, teasers leading up to the test, and a lore reason for them to be available for that weekend. It feels like Blizzard isn't really hyping us up anymore, or trying to build anticipation.

  6. IMO getting the balance right, so that the hero is powerful enough to be effective on release, is incredibly important and well-worth any minor hype-spoiling. It’s not just about the balance state in the hero release patch, it’s about the hero being able to actually find a place in the game going forward. It takes time for the community to develop the gameplay of a hero, and that process stagnates if they’re not enjoyable and strong enough for enough people to want to play them on release.

    We’ve seen before that when a hero is released under-powered, it takes a loooooong time for them to shed that reputation, even as they get buff after buff. And then at some point the meta shifts to favor them so heavily that people finally do learn to play the hero, and then all the buffs they got before end up being too much, because the players get much better at the hero very quickly. And I think it’s pretty difficult at that point for the devs to work out how to rein things in properly, because the impact of all of those little buffs over time ends up appearing all at once. In OW1 it happened with Orisa, Doomfist, Ashe. Arguably it happened with the 2-2-2 reworked version of Brig too.

    If people don’t play the hero, the devs don’t get the information they need to work out the kinks and fine-tune their role in the game. Multiple of the playtests have shown the new hero to be a bit underpowered at that point, so I think it’s very good that they did them. Every hero since Lifeweaver has been integrated into the game pretty successfully, I would say.

  7. I don't like them tbh. It is cool, but honestly it completely takes the wind out of the sails of the new season.

    I'd rather just learn more about the hero's lore and kit in the weeks leading up the their release.

    Ik they get balance info, but honestly with the new hotfix systems they have now, they can make reactionary changes faster.

    Also, they absolutely NEED to keep new heroes from comp for at least a week after release.

  8. "feeling like theres no new content" is no where near enough of a reason to warrant no hero testing. Lifeweaver and illari both were so terrible on release and it felt like it took so long before they felt balanced in game. the whole time i was begging WHY dont they let us test it before releasing garbage? theres always new content in a season-getting to test and help balance the new hero doesnt take away from the balance changes, new battlepass, new events etc. of a season. ignoring the rest of what comes out because you got a taste of the new hero for 3 days is a bit entitled

I honestly think the gap needs to be bit longer if they want to make a big deal about the character actually releasing. to me it feels less like the trial ending and more like the new character being temporarily removed. It's fine of the character releases in a less balanced state during the trial because that's literally the point.

  10. I think Overwatch 2’s biggest problem is being lazy and greedy and canceling PvE while other live service games are not feeding players crap and then questioning why saying gamers should like that is wrong.

I like the hero trials cause it really adds to the community to show if a character's good too strong too weak just right etc as well as it helps them find some broken or funny bugs especially helps if its fairly close to the new hero season then youll still have the memory muscle memory for the character when they come out

  12. I don't like hero trials, I think it should be similar as it was in the good game (the one and only ow 1). Heroes should be released in qp and be locked off of ranked for a week or so while the team works on the balance of it, after one week, or when they feel it's all good it would be unlocked on comp games

  13. After every new hero gets a test weekend the hype for them on release is dead for me and the only thing on my mind when the new hero releases with the season is "when's the next one this one feels old already"
