Tom Heap looks at whether heat pumps are up to the job of keeping Britain’s homes warm and asks if they’ll ever be affordable.
He also speaks with Energy Minister Lord Callanan who accuses “vested interests” of “spreading misinformation” about the technology.

Why are we using foreign companies to install the heat pumps, with subsidies paid for by British taxpayers?
If we had more electrical energy we could make hydrogen to replace natural gas for domestic heating. Bring on more nuclear energy now.
92% are happy with their pumps, so 8% are not. That's terrible odds when we think how much they cost, I am for them but…
They are trash. won't be getting one anytime soon
Yet they still don't tax or try to reduce aircraft emissions….. odd isn't it?
Misinformation from the WEF and governments.
Carbon units are redundant silicon slaves are cheap and efficient
Put on a cardigan wooly sweater
Really pleased with ours. Currently 5.6c outside. Pump pulling 1.3kW and supplying 6.01kW heat. 14 rooms heated to 21c. No zoning. Underfloor heating throughout. Paying an average of 17p kWh for our electricity.
Cut the climate bs.
Gas heaters are great!
when and if we do get net zero in the UK and climate change is still on the rise what are we going to then has any one asked this question and what's the answer
My cottage runs on waste engine oil which I get paid for taking away from garages lot of black smoke but free heating 😅
Yes.
I seem to have missed the bit where they answered the question of whether heat pumps are up to the job. Of maybe the point of the show was to just ask the question?
nope
Imagine 1.8 million households in the Uk that run on electric heating converting to heat pumps, if only they didn't have a thing called leasehold that's stopping it. Eu countries far ahead? guess what feudal dated housing system the Eu countries don't have…
That house in Woking reminds of the film The Money Pit. Tom Hanks kept using the line 2 weeks. There are many stories of poor installation of heat pumps. A well insulated gas heated home is still cheap to run. I have an energy and broadband package which casts about £140 a month.
Heat pumps make a lot of noise, and when the houses are built so close to each other, I think they can be a menace. It would be better to build a district heater, if they absolutely must replace gas boilers.
better get used to wearing that coat round the house
Bs
What bollocks.
I`m not sure why we are dragging our feet.
Surly the goal should be to not be relying on the stability of the global economy.
We`ve seen what`s happened in the last 2 years, when relying on other countries to fuel our energy needs.
There`s massive oppotunities for investment and to grow the economy, just by this alone.
When the temperature is down to 3 degrees it costs £1.40 an hour its on flat out so do the maths, and that's only half the radiators on,mind there is 13 rads, 4 beds house to My self as council are criminals,,crazy
Sand and solar storage is a million times better
This calls for a heat off
If the planet really is warming up what we gonna need heating for anyway lol!
heat pumps have been around for 50 years or more and mainly in the nordic countries. Thy work well, key is goo design, good heat pumps and proper installation. electric costs will fall as more renewables and lots of energy companies are offering heat pump tariffs. the media is paid by oil and gas giants and so they will paint a black picture. We need to install insulation and do fabric improvements. Hydrogen wont happen and is just the fossil fuel industry dealy tactics.
gas needs to be taxed for the climate damage it is causing and then people would switch to alternatives.
the rich all have money in oil and so no motivation tto switch
A “Heat pump” although it sounds really cool and cutting edge works on the same principle as a good old fashioned split system air conditioner
using electricity to run a compressor and circulate a refrigerant
So unless it is run off some magic source of electricity will still contribute to global warming
It’s funny to hear people talking seriously about NET ZERO as if it really is a possibility
Seriously Mike Foster?
The biggest Gas Lobbyist out there!
Not a day goes by where he isn’t trying to smear heat pumps to push gas for his paying members.
Despite the fact for most, installed by competent people, work perfectly fine, including mine.
