Are Driverless Trucks The Future Of Shipping? Inside Waymo’s New Test Program

Waymo is betting that the future of shipping will be autonomous 18-wheelers. NBC News’ Gadi Schwartz meets Boris Sofman, the company’s head of engineering for trucking, to hear about its test program for semi-trucks. They go for a ride with a safety driver behind the wheel. As Waymo tests its self-driving trucks in Arizona, they say their biggest challenge is accounting for unpredictable behavior from others on the road. The U.S. is facing a growing shortage of truck drivers.

  1. Perfect, why get rid of a human bringing in products that we have to consume 🤔.? Is it because " they " don't want us to know what's being shipped in/out our states, …. I mean especially since all these human body parts are being brought to the light from being on 18 wheelers… but idk anything 😕

  2. The idea that these trucks are only meant to replace the shortage of drivers is pure propaganda. Once these work and have full DoT approval. Truck drivers are gone. My man with the best office seat in the world is doing all he can do to make sure that other truckers have no seat. Good job pal…

  3. i feel like in the beginning when it become way better that they will allow the trucks to drive them self until the truck get into a city or when it get near its drop off location and someone else will just get in the truck and help it to its destination and unload it.

  4. YES. Every business on the face of the earth #1 most expensive expenditure is labor.
Back in the bad old days most drivers were union. Driving paid a good wage. You
could make a good living driving. But, the corporate bean counters wanted to
increase their bottom line. Thats when they began union busting. The way it is
done is, a big trucking co either sells out to another company (the new co is
non-union of course) OR the trucking co creates a new company with new
name & new labor policies and all the experienced drivers get kicked to the
curb. The new co pays short wages. You get what you pays for. Thats especially
true when it comes to employees. So, trucking accidents are on the rise &
trucking co answer is to invest $M into self driving tech. They cant wait until they
perfect the tech & they can kick ALL their drivers to the curb.
    REMEMBER,
    Its nothing personal.
    Its business.

  5. You all are so ready to see people be stripped of their livelihoods for what? Most of you speaking have never and could never operate a semi-tractor trailer. You think it will stop at trucks? Soon we’d all be out of work, replaced by robots. Do you have a plan?
