‘Appalling’: Defence minister undermines US assistance in Australia’s national security

GXO Strategies Director Cameron Milner says it is “appalling” for Trade Minister Don Farrell to undermine the importance the United States plays in the defence of Australia considering the “assistance” they played in World War Two.

“I find it appalling, I live in Brisbane … if not for the US, we would not have been able to defend against Japan and the hyper aggression at that time from Japan,” he said.

“World War Two was won because of American assistance.

“And Australian grit, and hard work.

“It is appalling that we would forget that history so quickly and dismiss the importance of AUKUS.”

  1. Astounding response by Farrell at the despatch box. This gov't has ALL the hallmarks, reminds me of Gough & dysfunctional lot. It would seem, yet again, that we've got bad Labor gov't imperiling the safety of its people. Gough single handedly almost destroyed our US alliance. And there's dithering old 'Uncle' Don 'oiking up' with despatch box statements like that!

  2. This development worries me more than any of the other ridiculous decisions this government has made. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Mass murderous regime becomes Australia’s ally? Labor playing tea parties with a dictator?
    Insanity.

  3. How about you? Tell our Prime Minister to send out troops to defend innocent Palestinians, and hope the aid trucks And stop spreading misinformation deep inside your souls, and your humanity, and see the defending Palestine is the right thing to do. Please put a sake of our humanity May we all live in peace and prosper? May we love all things?

  4. Biden will want Aussie boots on the ground in Nazi Ukraine despite the US NATO Ukraine defeat at the hands of Russia and its allies. Avdiivka was a US NATO fortified platform used to bomb the Donbass Lugansk regions from 2014 when Obama's war started.

  5. Cameron Milner's mindset is rigid. He can't distinguish between the threat of Japan to Australia during WWII and the perceived threat of China to the US now. The Japanese aggression in Asia was expansionist or hegemonic, but the current Chinese threat to the US is economic and technological. It requires a different response from Australia as an ally of the US. China is the enemy of the US but the main trading partner of Australia. You cannot use the same tool to fix different problems. Your mindset has to be flexible in tackling such geopolitical challenges. In this case, the real challenge comes from the US which demands loyalty rather than the security of the whole Anglo-Saxon nations. Australia and Britain don't really share the same challenges from China, if anything at all. The relationship between Britain and China turned really sour as Britain's failure in HK really scratched deep into its pride and arrogance.

  6. What Albo is saying on AUKUS and what the left are doing are, like most things Labor, 2 completely different things. Occasionally you'll get a Freudian slip like Farrell's. The chorus of white-anting of the AUKUS alliance from left wing think tanks and social media is getting louder. Even the odd derogatory remark from their ABC. While AUKUS has majority support from voters I doubt there will be any change. Then again there is little action happening either. But the niggle is definitely on. Again, look at what they do and not what they say.

  7. The US screwed over Australia on the submarines and on coal sales when Scomo opened his mouth insulting China. The US said they were going to subsidy the loses from China's purchases.

  8. Paul Keating getting spical meeting with the visiting Chinese representative, read between the lines. Australia is not a satellite state of China and never will be. Is labour trying to tear Australia apart, they are doing a good job so far. Stand-up to China and we will wear the consequentives. So be it,
