One of the weirdest things about pea aphids is their reproductive cycle. Most animals reproduce in one of two ways: asexually or sexually. But the pea aphid does not stick to just one type of reproduction…and it gives birth to pregnant clones.

This month’s pin is designed by Sajan Rai. You can find out more about their work here: http://www.sajanrai.co.uk/

  1. The only reason this video didn’t make me hate aphids any more than I already do is because I’m already saturated with aphid hate and there’s simply no way to hate them more.

  2. This video is transphobic. Sex is a spectrum. Defining it based on gamete production invalidates those who identify as producing other gametes. Defining sex in any specific way is always exclusionary.

  3. Your pin club is fairly long running at this point, but after reading the fine print I am surprised new folks sign up for it. Charging twice in the first month for no good reason is just taking advantage of the people that dont read things through. Really not a good look. If you want to charge like a sign up fee, be more clear about it.

  4. Ok! The surprise ugly laugh of pure delight I made at “pea aphids only have hot girl summers” was a rare treat. Thank you as always for the neato info, and in this case specifically, for making me laugh so hard my body literally was not ready!

  5. you can't say we know nothing of bizarre beasts in our sugestions, cover the Portuguese man o' war, they are very common and incredibly strange (like all siphonophors).

  6. Every year when the ivy grows I look forward to Aphids.
Watching ants use them like crops-on-a-farm is outright fascinating!!!
Next time you see specs on ivy, take a closer look and see if there's ants farming goo.

Hank, you are amazing! Thanks again!
