Bit of info from behind the scenes interviews: Cerritos has a huge, oversized warp core because it's basically the starship version of a tractor's diesel engine. It's designed to be able to tow things or get hooked up to power external projects or stations.
(The ships's still not very fast but that's more a limit of the rest of the drive than the core)

I swear when Jax & the doctor first started hooking up, I was not for it, but it definitely adds more to both their characters. They're growing on me.
The whole thing with the masks was also a reference to TNG's "Masks", which has made it onto some worst episode lists… 😛
Have to admit, I actually like Shax and T'Ana's relationship…
