I think I once saw a documentary about the pyramids being built by workers, not by slaves, need to verify and I'm not an expert on the matter, but the documentary seemed well done…
Bella Meta!
The naive youth of the 21st that didn’t use their brains at all, believe the past was just as metropolitan as they were with on only difference being no electricity, no computers and a lot of horses instead of cars. Fortunately during the last global catastrophe they were wiped out due to be literally too stupid to survive without modern convenances.
"Reason, logic, and civility ruled…".
I'm curious to hear of any society or organization formed and ran in any other way.
Even modern democracy doesn’t work like it’s intended to. All you have to do to get votes is buy them by promising to make others pay for your debt or promise to give people money based on skin color and crimes from 300 years ago that the people of today never suffered. Or you have your own people count the votes and decide how much each vote is worth. It had nothing to do with having better ideas.
Thing is, the Persian Achaemenid empire–which was an exact contemporary of the golden era of ancient Greek city states–did abolish slavery. So it's not that recent a thing, and the ancient Greeks were definitely acquainted with the idea.
Fully agree, great, just one critic though: the pyramids were not built by slaves, that's only in Hollywood films.
12:20 You didn't have to show that, just the fact that religions are so prominent to this day is evidence alone.
"They hated Democracy". A lot of modern people and philosophers also hate Democracy. Because in reality there are 2 systems. Monarchy and Oligarchy. Democracy is a code-word for Oligarchy.
Ancient Greece was cool and never exterminated nations like romans (Gaul,Carthage,Ethruscans,Dacians)also never had killing for sport !
Ancient Egypt give food and pay for Pyramid slaves so in a way they were low paid workers not slaves !!!!
@Metatron The author seems to not understand Greco-Roman era notions of private/public, (the lack of) individualism, citizenship, … My understanding is it wasn't until Jesus that the individual even became a concept, that before Him the sins of the father were the sins of the son (and family). That the smallest grouping was the family (and ancestors- the whole thing with the ever-burning fire in the hearth and the ceremony excising daughters when they married into a new family…)
basically I think this author stopped paying attention to history class at 5th grade and has never grown up.
17:21 nope
hold up meta, the pyramids, wasn't there a few papers about how the hard labor only was done by slaves(including some poorer free men that earned a wage while having the same treatment) but everything from masonry, transport, food, entertainment, housing… to logistics was handled by free men with the exact treatment? I mean, i may be wrong but its sort pulling on a brain string of mine that i read a article or two about it all being built by free men at first and then read one that claim it was a mix between free men and slaves… this is a legit question because i barely remember reading this, let alone if it was legit …. it sorta makes sense since the pharaoh was a living god … and also they did need many skilled artisans that probably were not slaves and …. yeah i dont know by this point … any captains welcome
Given all this, I feel the need to say that a reasonable description of modern democracy is that 'It doesn't work, it just doesn't work slightly less badly than every other form of government we've tried.' Present day democracys have many, many flaws. It's just that other forms of government generally speaking are worse. This doesn't mean our government is good, just that other possibilities are less good.
I'm with you up until the Pyramids. Slaves did not build them. That is a complete fabrication. Zero evidence, zero – exists that slaves were used. We currently have no real way to know who built the Pyramids. According to ancient people who visited to learn from the scholars and teachers in Egypt, they claimed that their ancestors, not them, built them. Even if you do not buy into an earlier human civilization, evidence indicates talented craftsmen lived near the Pyramids and were even buried in proximity. More evidence for a massively skilled workforce over slaves.
wow, they were based
I used to read cracked because I was an edgy 12 year old. Now I cringe thinking I liked their listicles.
Regarding presentism, I get the impression that it is one of two fallaceis we often encounter when discussing the past. The other would be using "we should judge historical figures by the standards of the time" as a Get out of Jail Free Card. That is throwing the phrase around without bothering to check what the standards of the time actually were, and just assuming that people in the past were all ruthless brutes. It's almost impressive that Cracked often manages to commit both fallacies in one article.
Hah, I can also name plenty of examples of superstition in our day and age: christianity, judaism, islam, etc. etc. 😛 It's just a thing human beings are prone to fall for, apparently.
14:56 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
17:22 actually the consensus of Egyptologists is that they weren’t. The workers were free labor farmers.
