  2. Part of me thinks that Marlene wanted to preserve the idea that the Fireflies were righteous and fighting for a better future, especially towards the end where they were all grasping at straws just to keep their group together.
It also wasn’t even them that brought Ellie across the country, but Joel. A person who’s seen how they really operate.

So she tried to dispose of him for two reasons:

First, when and IF they developed a cure, she wanted all the credit to go to the Fireflies so they could use it as leverage to draw more to her cause. Joel is a third party, with no allegiance to their cause and is someone who could give an account that goes against whatever narrative the Fireflies may generate in the wake of their potential cure.

And second, she clearly didn’t want to risk Joel possibly persuading Ellie not to go through with it, especially if the cure would cost her her life. Joel never had much faith in the Fireflies. I imagine it’s a story he’s heard before to no avail.

The thing Marlene probably didn’t expect was how close Joel and Ellie would get. Marlene’s only known Joel as a ruthless killer, and with the prospect of a reward, I think she expected him to keep Ellie at arms length.

TLoU (part 1 at least) tells such a well articulated and morally grey story.

Joel’s actions at the end of the game are definitely morally questionable, but given the context of the situation they were by all accounts very human.

Excellent video once again, Vile Eye! I always enjoy your uploads. 🙂

  3. Joel did nothing wrong.

Your assessment of the Fireflies is way to generous. They effectively run like a terrorist organization, and while FEDRA is also terrible, that doesn't mean the Fireflies aren't. Then consider, even if they make the cure, why wouldn't FEDRA kill them all and steal it? Hell, Joel may have actually saved the world by keeping Ellie alive… there is nothing the Fireflies could have done then they still couldn't do now. There are libraries with tons of information still, new doctors could be trained.

  4. I genuinely think the fireflies are the dumbest group in any form of media I have seen. They're like antifa except they're fighting a group that's trying to keep innocent people alive

  5. Any of the villainous or morally ambiguous characters from The Walking Dead. The Governor and Negan are obvious ones but Rick is someone that could be considered an antihero at times, slightly etching toward evil. It would be an interesting group of characters to look at.

  6. Whenever I debate whether or not it would be correct to sacrifice Ellie for a cure I always bring up the fact that even if a cure was possible distributing it would be very difficult and I don't think a lot of people would want a vaccine I'm sure the hunters don't care. The world is too far gone and restoring it to what at once would be would be pointless

  7. I bought the last of us when it first came out, pre order and everything. Blew my mind, storyline was unlike beyond anything else I ever played before, maybe uncharted, but this felt more immersive. And the pvp was badass. I still play the first one. Pre ordered part 2, loved the mechanics, beautiful graphics, cool storyline, but tbh I wish there would have been pvp

The whole world is about to change, but I wonder if even I can be redeemed. Your sacrifice gives me hope. But Father, wherever you are, I miss you."

  9. In an apocalyptic world the people who survive are those willing to kill other people so they themselves may live.

It’s not evil if your carrying out your human instinct to survive.

  10. Analysis from a culture turned Facist.

Individual Phedra (sp? – correct) soldiers are not necessaril6 evil as they are only supporting and participating in thebexisting system.

The same can be said of the invidual gaurds at Auschwitz.

There is no more moral ambiguity between a Phedra Soldier and and Auschwitz gaurd.

The Phedra soldiers are as morally blame worthy as the Auschwitz gaurd.

The Auscwitz gaurd always looks dutiful and honorable from the view from the interior ofbthe Fascist state.

  11. Knowing how incompetent the fireflies were, by taking out the fungus from Ellie's brain by finding a cure they probably would have started a new type of infected! Haha

  12. I don't think Joel's most evil moment is killing the fireflies. It's brutal and many would say unjustified but the masterstroke of The Last of Us is that we understand even if we don't approve. No his most evil moment and the moment that condemns him, at least in the eyes of the audience, is his choice to lie to Ellie at the end and gaslight her for years. That is brutal manipulation and though Joel is an incredibly morally complex character that is undeniably awful.

  13. I am convinced that barring David and the Hunters, the Fireflies are the most evil faction in this setting. They utilize fear tactics and bomb innocents in the name of their ideology, and have failed to overthrow FEDRA, not even bothering with bringing about reform from within. Furthermore, we in the modern world know it is impossible for them to have ever made a cure. They even admit in the sure that they’re not sure if they can make it. Another thing that was lacking from this calculus was that Ellie was the only known person to be immune. If they went forward with the surgery, she will die. They will fail to make a cure as the brightest minds of the setting said such a thing was impossible. At best, they can make a vaccine, which wouldn’t change much, but even that was a big maybe. That and their decision to force this decision upon a little girl who knew none of this makes their actions completely and utterly detestable. Even then, they had no method by which to distribute it, and there’s no saying whether or not they’d just horde it for themselves.

Ironically, for a group all about freedom, they seemed to have dropped such notion rather quickly when it came to Ellie.

Lastly, if memory serves, the Fireflies are unquestionably evil in the video game, as they do far more evil.

  14. What an awesome video. I have recommendations for the villains that would make a great analysis for your channel, villains such as William Stryker from the X-men films, Two-Face from Dark Knight, Deacon Frost from Blade (1998), Ras al Ghul from batman begins, Syndrome from the Incredibles, Tighten from Megamind, Yokai from big hero 6, Malekith from the MCU, Captain Wafner from Overlord, and Magneto from the X-Men films.
