Following the announcement the Australian government is set to donate 49 M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, Sky News Political Reporter Cameron Reddin has examined how the tanks match up against Vladimir Putin’s Russian arsenal.

The M1A1 Abrams tank is designed to travel over long distances and withstand heavy damage from explosives.

The Defense Department late last week notified Congress of a possible $475 million-$550 million foreign military sale for M1A1 tanks and related equipment to Australia. In a May 21 statement, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Australia had requested 59 M1A1 Abrams Integrated Management (AIM) tanks, seven M88A1 medium recovery vehicles, 80 AN/VRC-92F dual long-range Single Channel Ground and Air Radio System (SINCGARS) radios, 146 AN/PVS-7B night vision goggles, 73 M2 .50 caliber machine guns, an additional seven M2 .50 caliber… [Can't find an exact cost].

Most of the Abrams that Russia has destroyed have not been destroyed in tank on tank battles but rather the Abrams, Challengers and Leopards have met their doom by UAVs, antitank missiles, land mines and shoulder held ATGMS. Why bother ASSessing our tank park – we have NO LETHAL DRONES at all, at a time when the world is going over to drone warfare big time !!! I would have thought our military people would have looked at how poorly the Abrams have performed thus far in Ukraine and deiced to invest in UAV'S instead.
