Armenian-American singer and activist Serj Tankian sat down with Lara Tcholakian to talk about what it means to lead a meaningful and mindful life. He takes us on a journey of how his sense of justice and passion for music and the arts enabled him to discover his purpose. Tankian speaks about his experiences during and after the 2020 Artsakh War, his thoughts about the need for a strong and independent Armenia, his triggers related to injustice, and the importance of finding the voice within.
About Serj Tankian
Serj Tankian is a renowned singer, songwriter, poet, visual artist, film producer, composer, and activist. He is the founder and lead vocalist of the Grammy-winning band System of a Down. Since the band’s hiatus, Tankian has released a number of solo albums, including Elect the Dead (and Elect the Dead Symphony), Imperfect Harmonies, and Harakiri. He has composed soundtracks and scores for symphonic orchestras and films, including 1915, Furious, and Spitak. He is founder of the record label Serjical Strike Records and has served as a producer for numerous documentaries and movies, most recently Amerikatsi. He is the co-founder of the non-profit organization Axis of Justice, alongside fellow musician Tom Morello, and is an ardent advocate for environmental justice and animal protection, among many other social and political issues.
