  1. It all boils back to scales of efficiencies. It doesn't just apply to progressively larger energy systems but transportation and manufacturing as well. There is a special magic and efficiency that only really large machines can deliver per unit of thing made, moved or worked off of. After a waterway a railway is the only other thing that allows towns and cities to be born.
