Hi everyone! I’m an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through YouTube videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let’s be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

Having a diverse perspective is crucial to what I want to achieve here so please don’t hold back! I want to learn about all I can! Keep recommending and PLEAESE join my Discord 🙂 ( https://discord.gg/ejxUtD2X )

  1. Russian and Chinese strategic bombers were attempting to cross into alaskan airspace in joint mission literally this week. They were intercepted by alaskan air national guard. You right about we aren’t in the cold war of old. But we are in the cold war 2.0 and a lot closer to it becoming hot by the day. I appreciate that your learning about history but dont lose sight of whats going on right now.

  2. Our Prime Minister has the authority to respond to threats and authorise military intervention. If it continues or is required again, it is expected they will go to Parliament for support. The opposition is kept in the loop and that way they can unite in the face of ongoing threats

  3. The English Channel is a minute or two away from London by enemy fighter jets. The Russian activity you saw isn't something from the past…it's happening all the time. Be in no doubt this is very very real and I think many Americans don't understand the threat or the importance of NATO. What happens here will effect you guys too!!!!

  4. You have to realise Putin is a brain-dead pillock & simply enjoys playing at war games hence the fly overs against NATO, he must get his thrills that way. You possibly get some Russian jets flying in close to US & Canadian air space too, they will react in a similar manner to UK. If it was a real terrorist threat those Typhoons will shoot it down with the go from the PM. Not many Russian planes have the speed to out fly them just some of the fighters which are not a threat to UK as they don't have the fuel capacity to get here, the bombers don't stand an earthly. It's Putins little game!

  5. It depends on the design of the aircraft, the f-16 has one, there 15 and the typhoon have two is often thought better than one particularly with larger or middle range combat aircraft due to thrust without reheat, as well as failsafe

  6. I was lucky enough to spend a few years flying the aircraft used in the filming as the “target” for the QRA intercept. Our “day job” was Electronic Warfare and threat simulation for the RAF and the Royal Navy. We would do several of these unidentified target missions every year, the response was always immediate and a fully armed Typhoon sitting alongside certainly gets your attention.

To answer a couple of your questions: The time between detection and London could be very short, however we would expect the French / Dutch or other NATO partners to already have a handle on the situation and effect a handover to RAF interceptors. European air defence is very well integrated.

As for communications, we would expect any aircraft to be monitoring the “Guard” radio frequencies in order to be able to respond. Failing that crews should be trained in the hand signals and wing-rocking manoeuvres of the interceptors and, as was the case with the Latvian aircraft, simply follow your interceptor to where he wants you to go, knowing that his fully armed mate is sitting in you six o’clock waiting to do his ultimate job if required.

  7. It’s to do what they’re told to! But that’s mainly to intercept anything not doing what it’s supposed to in British Airspace. Much the same as in the US.
And before the Americans make comments about the Typhoon vs the F-22 & F-35, then each aircraft have their advantages but it’s absolutely arguable that the Typhoon may well be the aircraft best suited to a dogfight if appropriately armed although if appropriately armed they’ll probably never make visual contact with their opponent!

Wrt it not being the Cold War I’d say that’s arguable, particularly in Europe and if the US become isolationist which would be absolutely stupid for them to do but if it happens then we’ll deal with the fallout until it potentially gets so significant it ends up involving them anyway precisely because they became isolationist in the first place 🙈 idiots…!

  8. The "terrorist" prevention, identification & escort of unknown/incommunicative aircraft is a secondary job. Their main role is to defend the airspace of the UK. The Threat has mostly come from The Soviet Union, and Now the Russian Federation. They are constantly being tested by Russian bomber flights.

  9. 32:15 Hi Connor! You're absolutely right there. Rocking the wings from side to side is way of saying I am unable to communicate. After acknowledging this the plane must follow the intercepting aircraft.

  10. Odd the pilots don't want there surnames out in public i get that but even odder they are happy to be filmed. Humm..usually if its a issue the face would get blurred or the voice changed to protect the identity.

  11. Comment @ 1:00 NATO is fighting a Modern War, It's not a WWI type war, It's a Multi-Media War, From already owning the Potential next board game's King, to having, Chinese ships drag up telecom cables from the Baltic Sea bed, Please do try to keep up, I know it's all going on behind the scenes, because that's the nature of Covert warfare,

  12. Their job is to defend UK airspace against ANY airborne threat. Yes, that could mean a hijacked airliner, but Russian jets probe the UK's Air Defence Identification Zone regularly. They have to be escorted away and one day may have to be destroyed. There are many reasons to have either one or two engines. One is actually more efficient in terms of performance, as well as being cheaper to operate and less liable to fail (although if it does the consequences are usually worse). Twin engines used to be used for safety reasons but this is no longer relevant for fighters. The main reason nowadays is that it's harder and riskier to develop bigger, more powerful engines to it's common to have two smaller engines than one larger one. The PM combines many of the functions of POTUS and the majority leader in Congress. Technically His Majesty the King is CinC UK Forces but in practice most of the role and all the real power is delegated to the PM and thence to the Secretary of State for Defence. One reason for flying so close is to communicate with hand signals. That happens more often than you'd expect. The military is like insurance: nobody really wants it and certainly doesn't want to use it, but when you need it you're bloody glad you had a good policy!

  13. the official Cold War is no longer, but there is an unofficial Cold War, Russia is still probing NATO airspace, even after the 8 years of this video. It is the job of the Prime minister, or in his absence, the most senior Cabinet politician available, to issue the KILL order.

  14. Connor if Air force one with the president on board flew into one of our no go areas the RAF would shoot it down. Likewise if the King flew into one of your no go areas we would expect you to shoot him down. It Don't matter who you are you expect the defenders to do Thier duty.
