Bear in mind that all civilian aircraft were grounded at the time of both exercises and the defenders knew that an attack was coming. Imagine how much more difficult it would be to defend the airspace against an unexpected attack with civilian aircraft complicating matters.
What more can be said of the Vulcan, she is the single most incredible aircraft and the howl is something to behold! It’s a shame XH558 is grounded.
Was not even a realistic exerctse as in real attacks the civilian aircraft would be there and you would have to pick the enemy out of the civilian aircraft.
A Vulcan flew low over my city about forty years ago and it just seemed to fill the sky.
Embarrassment might have been a factor but not letting the Russians know about American weaknesses would have been top priority.
You have to hear a Vulcan howl
As the saying goes its not the size (of your armed forces) that counts it's what you do with it that matters.
what a pity it was not for real. it could a have got rid of a few millions of warmongering septic tanks. as the only good septic tank is a dead one
May i point out they got through twice while all civil aircraft were grounded imagine how easy it woupd have been with those aircraft in the air. Also a bigger military does not mean better. A smaller more highly trained military is much more effective.
Battle of Mirbat (9 SAS Soldiers VS 300 Adoo Guerrillas) by Simple History which is considered the best operation in SAS history& Operation Black Buck by The Operations Rooms which was a Vulcan operation which was the longest operation till 2001 by USAF
RAF the best Air Force ever, not only did they use the same tactics to raid USA twice but to rub salt in the wound they landed in NY. also the RAF train other countries Air Forces.
I love how the Vulcan landed in New York. It`s like telling them `I`m here, you missed me! `
Too much chit chat guys
Wonder what the excuse for grounding the civilian flights was.
What makes it even more ridiculous, or funny, is the fact that the US Military knew we were coming, and even though they had grounded all other aircraft, we got through easily, using intelligence and superior technology.
You wanna see the new futuristic fighter the RAF are building, the Tempest. That MF is AWESOME!!
A Vulcan flew over me a few years ago when it did a tour of the UK and the noise was unbelievable and also what a sight to behold.
56,000 ft is 17 kilometres. They would have had to go another 83 kilometres in order to reach the Karman Line the recognised line between Earth and Space. Also all that money counts for nothing if the enemy can simply outsmart you just once!
Vulcans testing car alarms at all airshows
As a side note, Spencer are you aware that Fortunate Son is an anti war protest song? I'm sure JF would be mortified to know that you hear it with a swell of nationalistic military pride!
But I’m not sure the exact words used but when the Vulcan requested permission to land in New York the tower said “where are you?” he replied “I’m just coming in on the flight path” and they didn’t even know he was there!
On another one of these joint exercises there was a fighter vs fighter component . I’m not sure what the US was flying but the British pilots were in their Harriers and the RAF pilots enjoyed considerable shootdown advantage it was something like 10 or 11 to one .
One of the American pilots was quoted as saying something like “well how the hell am I supposed to hit something doing 600 mile an hour at weed top which suddenly stops and starts flying backwards !”
No wonder the US Marines loved their Harriers 😍😍
56,000 feet is about 10 miles, space is about 60 miles. They were great training missions, cousins looking out for cousins.
Can you imagine the commications between the Whitehouse and the Chiefs of Staff in the Pentagon when the outcome of the tests was realised, more than a few senior officers left with their ears burning.
I once experienced the takeoff of a vulcan bomber at an RAF airshow, once experienced never forgotten.
The power that aircraft had, it was like your bones vibrating, and the noise was like the gates of hell being opened, the howl of those engines opening up was the most unearthly thing I have ever heard.
Well only 2 aircraft hit the twin towers & 1 hit the Pentagon ???😅🇺🇸😅🇺🇸😅🇺🇸
You missed the point! This was to stop russia, we know how big that is! But little Great Britain got through, twice. We may be a small Country but look at our history and what this little island Conquered. At one time or another we have Conquered 60% of the World.
Look up what Great Britain Conquered. You said about the American Navy, but thing about this is was Great Britain and her Royal Navy that stopped the transatlantic Slave trade, did you know that?
From this exercise the U.S. grounded every aircraft when 911 occurred, lessons learnt.
I believe the US learnt a lot from these test, it goes to show that no one country is perfect and that there is always something to learn or improve upon from other countries' tactics and experiences.
Earlier this week the UK's air traffic control system got a couple of gremlins in it, and this affected around 8,000 flights in one way or another – that was around 12 hours.
I was once told that the sun never set on the British Empire – because God didn't trust the sneaky b'stards in the dark.
Look up somthing called operation black buck. A raid on a runway during the Falkland conflict, it was either an 8000 or 16000 mile round trip by vulcan bombers….
The Vulcan was only at 10.6 miles about sea level.
You guys need to watch GLORY AT SEA made in 1952… relation to the turpets and a previous video you made months ago.
You should watch some of the videos of the Vulcan at air displays and hear the famous Vulcan howl
Miss the Vulcans in pur skies – best bomber since the Lanc, they also took part in The Falklands War Op Black Buck longest bombing raid in history. Basically they were suicide bombers as far as nuclear attacks go as it was a one way ticket and if anything went wrong in flight it was only going to be the 2 up front who had any chance of getting out.
Mark Felton has done some excellent military videos
As a lad I was in the ATC and fondly remember sitting in a Vulcan imagining what it would be like to fly in one, I concluded that it would be terrifying!!!
56,000 feet equates to 10.6 miles high.
