American writer and liberal political columnist Max Lerner discusses the implications and possibilities for American domestic and foreign affairs after the resignation of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. This lecture is part of a six-part series based on Lerner’s book, America as a Civilization: Life and Thought in the United States Today (1957). In this lecture, he reviews the current state and recent history of American foreign policy and speculates on potential successors for Secretary Dulles. He comments on the international state of diplomacy and colonialism and contends that “we are at the beginning of what may well prove to be a new era in foreign policy.”
