Am I A Sucker For Buying Into Jason Aaron Batman Offworld?

Longtime Marvel writer Jason Aaron made his debut on Batman this week. Batman Offworld may not be the most daring comic, but there is something to enjoy here. At this point, does it make you a sucker to believe Jason Aaron can write a story without destroying the character? Wes and Dok review Batman Offworld #1 and try to determine if Wes is a complete sucker. Is DC Comics the change Jason Aaron needs to rediscover his ability to tell a good comic book story? Am I a sucker for buying in Jason Aaron Batman Offworld?

  1. I loved Jason Aaron's Thor run but dropped his Avenger's run half way thru. This opening issue of Batman: Offworld is really good. It is accessible, classic Miller-Year-One-Batman in space. Having read issue 2 already I can promise you that if you liked issue 1 you will love issue 2. The stakes are raised for Batman's first galactic adventure.

  2. Im a massive Batman fan. This is a meh comic. I agree it will be something stupid like Batman was just in a simulation off world his whole life or some stupid shit that in the end will mean nothing.

  3. I didn't read much of Aaron except for Star Wars and Punisher. His run in Star Wars was great and he did a much better job writing Obi-Wan than the guys from the TV show, and, unpopular opinion, I really enjoyed his Punisher. I thought I would hate it, but the more I read, the more I wanted to keep following. And to me, his Punisher was thousand times better then Zdarsky's Daredevil, which turned Matt into a freaking asshole

  4. Meanwhile, Nightwing's comic revealed he has a fox fursona because of course he does. Nightwing's "fans" don't really understand the character, they just try to turn him into whatever feeds their fetishes at the time. This is the state of modern Batman comics and I hate it. It should be burned to the ground.

  5. We were vending at our LCS for Local Comic Shop Day last Wednesday, and I had time to skim through a few books on the stands this week. I was attracted to Batman Off World by the alien on the cover who had a costume somewhat similar to Aphrodite IX. Looking through the issue, it became clear that she was a new gorgeous Tamaranian character that Jason Aaron was introducing, and Lord knows we could use a couple of those. Her name is IONE (EYE-OWN-EE), actually, not "Eno", as Wes tries to pronounce it. Like the British actress Ione Skye. It seemed like one of the better Big 2 comics I saw on the shelf. And you know what it reminded me of? The origin story of Starfire where she gets kidnapped by the Okaaran slave traders. Always down for a decent space opera with lasers, spaceships, and hot alien girls.

  6. Sorry, listening to Doc complaining constantly about everyone and everything drains the life out of me. The novelty especially wears off in a situation like this where it’s a good book, written and drawn well.

If you complain about the good stuff it makes the criticism of the bad stuff far less constructive or insightful.

I appreciate the balance from your comics of the week videos, but every now and again it would be nice to hear Doc being pleasantly surprised by something otherwise the Doc videos are just going to become an easy skip for me, the same way I skip a lot of DC and Marvel comics when I see certain names on a book.

  7. Don't worry about it. We all get conned. I dislike Stupidman for numerous reasons so when I found out they were going to kill him off via Doomsday I got excited and bought the issue naively believing it was permanent( I was new to comics and didn't know about the revolving door known as comic book death).

  8. Lame story. It didn’t grab me and the jarring transition to Gotham at the end made no sense whatsoever. I re-read it three times and it is a horrible transition. I don’t know if it’s a flashback or what the hell it is. Frustrated and won’t buy issue 2!
