It’s been YEARS since dash cams hit the market, but it feels like we’ve been stuck at a standstill. Why is it that camera quality is so lacking? Are there really no good options when shopping for a dash cam to attach to the windshield of your car? (The second half of this video is pretty stunning!)

  1. I run a dashcam with a dual-camera setup, one camera faces the interior cabin and captures the driver side window in case I get pulled over. It's incredibly important to have a discrete camera running in order to capture interactions with law enforcement because there are a LOT of bad apples in the PD where I live. I actually caught an officer on camera lying about my speed and a supposedly "illegal" u-turn. I filed a lawsuit against the city in hopes to get that authoritarian swine fired.
Yes, most dashcams are notorious for poor quality video footage, which is puzzling to me because any 1/3" Sony imaging chip can capture the text on license plates, yet dashcam manufacturers NEVER use decent sensors. ALL dashcams should include a solid-quality 4K imaging chip for the main camera. It's 2023 for god sakes. What gives?? LOL

  2. Newer cars have great HD cameras. Many of them have them on every angle of the car. Why not try to capture the feed from those cameras for the purpose of a dashcam?

  3. I had the VIOFO A119 V3 trust me guys it's sucks. The screen is too small you can't see anything. You have to have it hardwired to your battery if you want to use parking mode. The buttons and the menu are extremely annoying. You're better off with the 30$ ONN dashcam from Walmart the screen is larger, 1080P 60fps, and parking mode works straight out of the box just plug and play.

  4. Bruh if you want a dashcam just purchase an old used phone or a cheap android, good video quality and a diverse set of additional features such as network connectivity, gps tracking your car, and a dedicated music machine.

  5. "It's not that hard to have a website" – you're missing the key component to having a website: Having a stable brand. The brands you find without websites change their names on a very regular basis. They operate on Amazon as long as they can until they start getting bad reviews, then rebrand to something else. The effort in making a website is thus multiplied by the number of times they need to rebrand. The irony is that this can be used as a litmus test for quality.

  6. I'm amazed that many shopping centres have absolute bricks for video footage; their security systems would cost substantially more than (random example) Reolink; or even Ubiquiti ecosystems, but they too can't capture faces; or license plates. I suppose protecting $50k-100k vehicles of customers; or items in shops who are leasing the space is not their priority interest; but really?
See many social media posts of the 10 pixel faces; and have personal experience when my car was written off in a carpark, they struggled to determine the make of car that hit it. Entry/Exit cameras couldn't even capture any license plates.

  7. Just a little story from Prague. One guy hit another guy – hit and run. Noone had a dashcam, but one lady started shouting license plate number loudly, another guy realized she has no pen, so he wrote that down and called Police. Then Police chased him and arrested him. Sometimes good people can do great things when they cooperate. 🙂

Ps: I would love to know if there are already some better dash cams TODAY @LinusTechTips

  8. i was really hoping for the front and inside camera ones being included. with the unhinged police running around in the US, we cant afford to travel without them.

  9. Save yourself hundreds of dollars by just getting a simple dashcam. One that records video and saves it on an SD card, you don't need anything more than that. Got mine on Amazon for 21 bucks and have 0 issues with it. All these app connections, voice detecting, Wi-Fi enabled gizmos are pretty useless for the average consumer. Think of it this way; the chances of you getting into or witnessing an accident where fault is immediately not obvious are low. Even lower if they try to pin the blame on you even though you are not at fault. So when are you going to take advantage of all these features? Statistically, low. So just get a simple dashcam and in the event something does happen, simply remove the SD card and plug it into your computer to save the footage. It's that easy. No "Nexar start recording" because that's just a gimmick that nobody really needs just to sell units.

  10. is there a way to mute the beeping noise on the f70?? also im not sure if u covered this but does the videos just overwrite each other over time or how does it prevent the video card from filling up after a few trips? thank you so much this video is amazing

  11. I went with the Rove R2-4K Pro version (not the same one he tested). It has the 670 chipset instead of the 660. It also has GPS and a super capacitor instead of a lithium battery. Its parking mode is pretty cool, too. Not to mention it has an IPS display, WiFi, and an F1.5 aperture instead of the non pro's F1.8 aperture. It's been my favorite dashcam so far. Still nowhere near the video quality of a GoPro, but for the money, it's my favorite. I've owned 6 different dashcam over the last 10 years. I use the Rove R2-4K Pro in my commercial vehicle.

  12. I paid £30 for one just over a year ago with an SD card. Watching this, I felt like it was pretty comparable to them all in image quality. Then you played the start up sounds and I heard the noise I hear every time I start my car XD

  13. I think one think to note is if the bulk of the camera is on a hinge, stay away from it. I had one similar to the Biuone A20, and I was in an accident where the camera lifted up and captured the sky. It was a cheap one from Amazon and all the video files from the accident were corrupted as well, I managed to recover some all of which only showed the sky making the footage absolutely useless to me.

  14. Yeah, but I think the main point of having a dash cams to prove what you were or weren’t doing. Proving to your own insurance that it wasn’t you who ran the red light or it wasn’t you that swerved into another lane or that you were fully stopped at a red light when you got rear ended. It’s to prove liability.

  15. I can't trust Amazon reviews. One time I got a phone case from there and it had a card that said, if I posted a positive review of the product, I would get a gift card. I didn't do it out of general principle.
