William Goldman had a simple rule for avoiding being sued when he wrote the script. If it was in the book, he was safe. Although Redford had optioned the book before it was published, it had been out for a while before the film was made. No one sued to say anything was false.
Could’ve watched ‘The Post’ before this. It dovetails nicely into the events of Watergate.
There is some confusion here. All the Presidents Men is not a true story but Air Force One is.
Redford did a movie with Brad Pitt called “Spy GAMES” you might like to see
A classic.
If you like reporting movies you'd like The Paper (1994) with Michael Keaton. So good.
Nixon resigned to prevent an almost certain impeachement and was immediately pardoned by his successor and previous vice president Gerald Ford.
Back when the Republican Party had integrity and put the country before their party Nixon resigned before he was Impeached seeing his party did not support him any longer he quit
Bob Haldeman was Nixon´s loyal and ruthless chief of staff and hatchet man, one of the most feared and powerful men in the white house
We currently have a very similar scandal in Poland. Government services tapped the phone of the head of the opposition's electoral staff. A Sejm (in the US house of representatives) Investigative Committee was established in this case. These things happen all the time… 😒
Funny when you started at 3:30 "isnt Nixon the guy with the scandal… this… Watergate" – having no clue that this movie is exactly about this.
Was really entertained by your reaction.
And no – no politics. Power always leads to the problem of abuse of power. Thats why in USA the first democracy was created – to balance power.
Btw – its really nice when you two react together.
Wish you all the best 🙂
VICE is a great modern 'political' movie that you might enjoy. Christian Bale, Steve Carell and Amy Adams are all excellent in it.
I know that you love Kevin Costner. You should watch his film JFK (1991). It concerns the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the possibility that there was a government conspiracy to assassinate President Kennedy. Since you just watched All The President’s Men you should check out the movie Nixon (1995). You should also watch W. (2008) which is about George W. Bush. All three of these films were directed by Oliver Stone and they make up his Presidents Trilogy. Oliver Stone directed Platoon (1986) which you’ve watched. Keep up the good work.
Another terrific reaction. Always glad to see Carly.
Redford contacted Woodward and Bernstein BEFORE they wrote their book and Hollywood wasn’t interested in a movie about Watergate but Redford saw this as a detective story and had everything to do with making this excellent movie happen.
Ben Bradlee was famous. How many editors are? Jason Robards won the supporting actor Oscar and his career was revived. He went on to win the next year for JULIA (which you should also watch). I lived through Watergate and I appreciate this brilliant film which captures a lot of how it felt to see the coverup unravel in real time.
Please watch another great film based on reality and directed by Robert Redford QUIZ SHOW.
I remember my first grade teacher asking us to tell her what we thought watergate was.
The movie "Timeline" would be a great one to review. Trailer… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GLVsHZ9J1I
Such a good film. Tricky Dik was the president…Three Days of the Condor (1975) is another good Redford film.
Excellent film and amazing how shortly after the Watergate affair it was made.
I'm really curious to see whether there will be a similarly good film about the events now surrounding the current Grifter in Chief. ^^
Nixon was voted to be impeached and he was advised heavily to resign. It rocked the country.
Yes Nixon was the guy with scandal
Classic!!!!
The House of Representatives had drafted articles of impeachment. Nixon was determined to hang on,convinced that he would not be convicted if impeached but a group of the most senior Republican Senators meet with him and said his own party was turning against him and he would lose. Nixon chose to resign rather than be kicked out of office.
The key piece of evidence came from the revelation that Nixon recorded all conversations in his office. The House of Representatives subpoenaed the White House to release tapes of key conversations and Nixon refused. It was taken to the Supreme Court which unanimously ruled that the tape had to be turned over. In what was called "the smoking gun" conversation, chief of staff Haldeman told the president of an investigation into illegal campaign activities and Nixon told him to "stonewall" the investigation thys directly ring him to an obstruction of justice. 6 days after the tapes were released, Nixon resigned.
Stardust.
Criminally underrated masterpiece.
Cult classic.
It stuns me to think you did not know what this movie was about. Stuns me!
40:37 there actual laws against election swinging.
It's worth noting that the reporting done by Woodward and Bernstein in reality had very little, if anything, to do with Nixon eventually stepping down, but rather the number of trials and hearings going on that led to WH staffers divulgiong that Nixon was taping everything and was required to release those tapes, that unravelled the Nixon presidency.
Now you need to watch Dick.
Good reaction! For presidential movies, I think you'll like The Contender (2000), and for Robert Redford and Brad Pitt, I think you'll like Spy Game (2001).
Carly was shocked when at the end of Titanic….. it sank!
32:24 Is that the actor from ST:The Motion Picture, who leaves the Enterprise to be with Vyger?
From the same director : Three Days Of The Condor and Klute
I reccomend you watch The Chase (1966) and Three Days of the Condor (1974) both with Robert Redford. They're very good movies too.
Brave of you two to go into watching this one blind, Watergate is complicated! Top film, the ultimate journalism film and remarkably released just two years after the events took place
Woodward's contact, whom he met in the garages, was nicknamed "Deep Throat" (Woodward called his information "Deep Background")
For decades no one knew who that guy was.
But in about 2005, he was named:

Cassie, I think there is a movie you should watch that deals with a conspiracy and Presidential involvement that although is fiction it’s very good and very similar to the “shove under the rug” that Watergate tried to be… it’s called “The Pelican Brief” and it stars Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington. You should check it out
The movie 'The Post' has a slightly different way of doing the same story. Just as captivating, it should be on your presidential movies list.
Please watch "The Post" after this. Meryl Streep in a great performance, a very good film about journailsm and politics, also based on real history.
One of Robert Redford last movies was the film "All is Lost" (2013) about a single man fighting the elements after his yacht runs into trouble and is damaged in a storm. I thought the film was excellent and I highly recommend it for a future watch.
