All 13 Times Severus Snape SAVED Harry – Harry Potter Explained

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’re covering every time that Severus Snape SAVED Harry Potter.

While, of course, it is true that Snape had little love for “The Boy Who Lived”, the fact remains that he had A LOT of love for Harry’s deceased mum, Lily Potter. As anyone who has read or watched the final movie of the Harry Potter series will know, the whole reason Severus abandoned his allegiance to the Dark Lord in favour of being a double agent for Albus Dumbledore and The Order of the Phoenix was indeed his feelings for Lily – a devotion that seemed to only deepen with her murder, committed by Voldemort himself.

In any case, in the wake of Lily’s death, the only part of her that lived on was, of course, her son, Harry. Unfortunately, for Harry and Snape both, the boy was also a constant reminder to Severus that Lily had chosen a life and partner who wasn’t him. That partner was, of course, James Potter, who had been a peer of both Severus and Lily at Hogwarts, and who had spent years tormenting Snape.

So, what does this leave us with? We know that Snape likely felt incredibly torn over his feelings for the young Harry Potter when he finally arrived at Hogwarts, 11 years after his beloved Lily had been murdered alongside her husband – whom he loathed – at the hands of his former master, who he had betrayed in an attempt to save Lily, only to have her die and Voldemort disappear.

  1. Here’s a theory. Did Snape actually kill Dumbledore? Now first and foremost I’m not suggesting that Dumbledore is still alive. He’s definitely dead. What I am saying is that when casting an unforgivable curse, the castors intent must be clear. We know that to cast an unforgivable, you have to want to take control of someone. You have to want to cause someone excruciating pain and you have to want to kill someone. Snape made it clear he did NOT want to kill Dumbledore which means the curse wouldn’t have worked. That brings about other possibilities. Maybe the curse from the ring killed him. Maybe the curse weakened him enough where he fell back and off the tower. Maybe Dumbledore decided this was the moment to die and he willing flung himself off the tower. It’s quite interesting to think about.

  2. Ok. Does Snape watch over, protect, and save Harry…yes.

However, you reached too far on many of these.

    2. Expiliarmus. Snape USED the spell in front of Harry….and everyone else. It was effective against a hapless Lockhart. Harry just remembered the spell.
    3. Snape told Draco how to CONJURE the snake. He vanishes it AFTER Harry is controlling it.
    4. Saved from Lupin in werewolf form…is only in the movies. In the book, he was still unconscious.
    5. Occlumency was taught, true. But it accomplished nothing.
    8. Potions book…found accidentally. Snape may have GUESSED Harry had it, but there's no hard evidence. Potions prepared by Harry never saved him…The biggest gain was liquid luck and saving Ron from the poison.
    9. If Snape knew Harry had the book, then he knew Harry had access to at least ONE dark magic spell. And did nothing. If he DIDNT know, there's still saving Draco…and the unbreakable vow…meaning, he had no choice.

The other instances seem valid to me. 😊

  3. I would argue that, in the movies, Snape actually cared about Harry – after dealing with his mixed emotions and conflicted feelings for the son of a woman he loved and a man he absolutely despised. We never truly see the extent to which Snape cares for Harry, but you can infer a bit if you look closely at his expressions throughout the films (courtesy of the amazing Alan Rickman, who, in my opinion, wanted to portray Snape as someone who is capable of loving fiercely, but is a master at hiding his true feelings). His silence when Dumbledore asks him if he's come to care for Harry is pretty telling, especially in contrast with the book's "For him?!" line. His request for Harry to look at him one last time, is a gentle contrast to the forced command from the books.

  4. If you watch the movie of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry produces the patronus charm for the first time to protect Sirius for 2 dementor kisses. However, when he returns he can suddenly produce a much much much bigger patronus charm to get rid of all the dementors at the lake. How is it possible that there is such a big difference in his patronus charms within a day time?

  5. I would like to add a counter point to #9, he did help when draco was hit with sectumsempra, however if draco was to die, i think snape was also to die due to the unbreakable vow.

I feel he was given no choice regardless. So i think it was less of helping harry and more of self preservation.

  6. I wonder what the signature spell of other wizards would be. Im pretty sure Hermiones would be accio 'Hogwarts ,A history.' But what of the other characters?

  7. It's interesting that movie Severus is different from book Severus, despite being similar. I think this is proof that movie Severus wasn't as bad as his novel counterpart was, especially since he never really yells or expresses high emotions in the movies like he does in the novels, nor bullies other students aside from Harry. I wonder if Rowling and the writers did this because maybe she felt that was where she may have went wrong with the character, that maybe she made book Snape a little too unlikable and mean.

Regardless, Alan Rickman was a great choice for the character, and he did an amazing job portraying him. Maybe it's because I was reading the books when the movies were coming out, but I always imagined Alan's look and voice whenever Snape was on the pages.

  8. To be fair to Harry, about his attack on Draco:

1.) He wasn't intending to kill.
2.) Draco was about to use Crucio on him, so he was defending himself.
3.) Harry didn't know what Sectumsempra did.

Therefore, I don't think it would have been murder, even if Draco had died, though I think it would have haunted Harry for the rest of his life, not to mention would have meant that the power of the Elder wand would have gone out with Dumbledore's death, which meant that it would not have played a role in the final duel in the Great Hall.

I also think it unfair that neither Snape nor McGonnagal heard Harry out about Draco. I mean, it's basically like the Dementor incident in Order of the Phoenix, where the Ministry was trying to expel him for using a Patronus to save himself and Dudley. I'm actually surprised that Snape didn't attempt a memory charm on Harry. If McGonnagal had listened to Harry about Draco using Crucio, at least enough to give him Veritiserum to know for sure, once they proved Harry had been right, Draco would have been expelled and arrested which I think may have triggered the Unbreakable Vow and killed Snape, as Snape was supposed to protect Draco and help him and do the deed if Draco couldn't. Allowing Draco to be expelled and lose his wand, and likely go to Azkaban, possibly for life, for trying to use Crucio, would have meant he failed to uphold his word.

Also, if Harry had been expelled, and possibly arrested too, for Draco's death, then that would have foiled Dumbledore's plan for Harry to destroy Horcruxes. And while Snape didn't know about the Horcruxes (likely more out of let's make sure that Voldemort doesn't know what we're up to in case he gets into your memories rather than mistrusting Snape), he knew that Harry was meant to do a lot of damage to Voldermort, something he couldn't do while expelled and, even worse, in Azkaban.

All in all, the whole incident would have been a huge can of worms for the plot of Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows had Draco not recovered and Harry been expelled, or had Draco been expelled and, possibly arrested, for trying to use Crucio on Harry.
