AirBaltic is in BIG TROUBLE with Airbus A220! Here’s Why
Recently, AirBaltic made a decision that caused a stir in the aviation industry to ground all of its A220 300 aircraft due to engine-related issues. But how would this decision affect its operation? Are there any other engines facing similar problems? Let’s see!
00:16 Situation and Causes
AirBaltic has announced that some of its A220 300 aircraft will be grounded until 2025, forcing the airline to make significant adjustments to its operational network. As a result, 40 routes have been affected, with 19 routes suspended entirely and 21 routes seeing reduced frequencies. This means that up to 67,160 passengers are expected to be impacted during this summer season, causing considerable disruptions to their travel plans. The scale of the impact – 40 routes and over 67,000 passengers – is substantial, especially during the peak travel season.

This decision not only highlights the challenges faced by the aviation industry but also raises questions about balancing operational efficiency with maintaining commitments to customers. Nevertheless, AirBaltic remains steadfast in its mission to connect the Baltic region with the rest of the world. With more than 70 destinations across Europe and beyond, the airline continues to ensure essential connections between the Baltic states and major global hubs.
AirBaltic is in BIG TROUBLE with Airbus A220! Here’s Why
Explaining the cause of the situation, AirBaltic’s flight cancellations stem from “unanticipated delays and prolonged engine maintenance” Geared Turbofan (GTF) equipped on the A2 20 300 caused by the supplier Pratt & Whitney. In its statement, AirBaltic did not hold back in its criticism, stating that “the engine manufacturer failed to meet its maintenance obligations on time.” The airline also emphasized that it is “working closely with Pratt & Whitney to address these delays and find a sustainable solution.”
The situation intensified further when Latvia’s Minister of Transport, Kaspars Briškens, publicly criticized the decision to cancel flights. On social media platform X on Thursday morning, he called on AirBaltic’s management to promptly provide a clear explanation for the situation. Writing in Latvian, Minister of Transport Kaspars Briškens emphasized that AirBaltic’s management failure to publicly explain its decision was “completely unacceptable.” This intervention is easily understandable, as the Latvian state owns a 97.97% stake in the airline, which entails a significant responsibility to closely oversee AirBaltic’s operations.

Not sure why CFM and GE are mentioned? The ONLY engine fitted to the A220 is the Pratt GTF, The reason the Q400s and 737 Classics they flew were retired was COVID. They weren't going to drop their latest planes. What you have to remember is that most low cost carriers all have single aircraft type operation.
that AI voice. Pratt [pause] and Whitney.
