Against All Odds, Shikin Shelter Survives

In a small village nestled in the district of Alor Gajah, Melaka, one extraordinary woman has dedicated her life to rescuing and caring for animals in need.

Meet Norashikin Ahmad, a 30-year-old Muslim woman whose unwavering compassion has made a remarkable impact on the lives of countless strays and abandoned creatures.

At the tender age of 21, Norashikin embarked on a journey to care for the forgotten and injured animals that crossed her path. What started as a humble mission has now blossomed into the Shikin’s Team Animal Rescuers, or STAR, shelter—a beacon of hope for animals in need of care and medical attention.

For nine years, Shikin’s Shelter has stood as a testament to the unwavering dedication of Norashikin and her team of volunteers.

Located on her family’s land within a traditional Malay-Muslim village, their noble work hasn’t come without its challenges.

Being surrounded by neighbours who are less caring towards dogs especially, has subjected Norashikin and her family to criticism and disapproval. In fact, there was a time when her own mother, overwhelmed by societal pressure, made the difficult decision to cast her daughter out of their home.
