  1. Reminds me of high school math class. I was "Tom" and there was a "Dan" in my class. He used to get picked on by everyone for asking questions all the time. One day I had enough and told the "jock" to shut up. I informed "jock" he had no right to criticize "dan" when his scores matched "Dan's" that's when he could criticize him. I further expounded loudly enough for the rest of the class to hear: "the person I respect and admired the most in the whole class was "dan". Why? Because he knew he had comprehension difficulties and worked very hard to overcome them (97+/100 in tests)" I further announced that I could easily score as well if I wasn't such a lazy ass and knew how to study(I seriously don't know how to this day – I absorb knowledge by osmosis and memory). I also speculated that "dan" would be the most successful out of everyone there because he was the only one who had the drive to overcome his difficulty.
He finally smiled because someone besides his parents acknowledged his hard work. Here's the most awesome part: dude had a killer smile!!! It turned his features from a 5 to a 10. Seriously Brad Pitt would look second-rate when that guy smiled. I swear every female in the room instantly had soaking wet panties!
The rest of high school went well for him – if anyone tried picking on him they were jumped by every female who witnessed it.

  2. Parts of this reminds me of Conrad Hensley character from Pittsburg, CA in the Tom Wolfe book Man In Full. When that character gets the Ancient Greek Stoics sent to him by accident, in prison, changes him so much that he actually becomes enlightened.
