Adventure Island NES Walkthrough | 100% Guide | Video Games 101

In this Adventure Island NES walkthrough, we show you how to get through one of the most frustrating titles ever to grace the NES, and certainly one of the hardest from Hudson Soft. With one-hit deaths and arguably more pits than any other game you’ll ever play, this game is a monster. Speaking of which, we’ve done a lot of classes here on Video Games 101 so far, but in terms of personal accomplishments, this might be my proudest as I explain near the end of this one.

  1. Another frequent childhood rental which I never completed. My friend Timmy did own it though! I remember one day I came home from school and went to Timmy’s house instead of mine (he lived two houses down), and his mom was playing this colorful, fun new game and having an absolute blast. It was Hudson’s Adventure Island! Miss you, Timmy.

Looking forward to the lesson, prof!

  3. I can remember the first time I ever played this game was at a friends house and he had the cool ahead of their time wireless controllers (they did not work) and so it was a nightmare. You would try to react quickly and jump and it would either not jump or reacted a half hour too late

  5. Your original playthrough of this is one of my favorites to watch, though the no death run you did was also very impressive.

If you're looking for a recommendation, might I suggest Legacy of the Wizard? It's from our friends at Broderbund and a really really underrated game. I'd highly suggest doing your due diligence and study up for it, though. They kinda just throw you in without a background and it's easy to not know what to do and get lost.

Anyway, thank you for all the videos you provide. They help me get through tough times. Take care

  6. Might be a bit of mandela effect on my part, but I recall an episode of game theory where the challenge was to discern the location of the setting for the game(s). After comparing the relative variety of fruits and the eggplant, along with the scenery for the different stages, it was deduced that it was likely modeled after the real life region of the Phillippines, since it's one of the few qualifying venues where such fruits grow naturally, the biomes track along with the wildlife. Also, surmising that higgins'… bounteous figure was a dig at perceived oppressors. Granted, looking back, I wouldn't be surprised that MatPat was reading a mite too much into it.

  7. 58:40 I thought that Fluff would appreciate a bit of trivia about the eggplant power-down. The music which plays while Master Higgins is under the influence of an eggplant is off-putting by design. It is actually a slowed-down, minor key version of the main Adventure Island level theme! You can observe this yourself by finding a YouTube video with the eggplant theme song and adjusting the playback speed to "1.75X" using the gear icon. Cheers!

  8. I briefly played the original Wonder Boy on the Sega Master System, but I know the two sequels inside and out; especially The Dragon's Trap. It's pretty hard to play The Dragon's Trap without using passwords to at least add more gold.

  9. When you get the time I highly recommend you play the Wonder boy games.
Monster land, The Dragon's Trap, monster world, 4 are all amazing games.
There is Wonder boy 3 but personally I don't really enjoy that game.
in 2018 a new game called Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom came out which has tons of call backs, characters, music, etc to all wonder boy games even the first wonder boy game that became adventure island on nes, I have that game on the gamegear and the switch remake which are fine games but I prefer the later 2D rpg games, they remind me of zelda 2 (another game I love alot).

Will warn you tho Monsterland is a fantastic game but it's one of the most frustrating games to complete due to alot of trial and error gameplay, secrets and you're on a time limit while going for the equipment to defeat the many bosses easily including the final boss, that's if you can make it to the FB since the final level is a maze that does troll you and it's a major endurance.

I spent alot my time as a kid mastering Monsterland but I recommend anyone to use a walkthrough while doing practice runs, I have no shame using guides these days lol also take advantage of secret stages to get more money to overwhelm your enemies.

The later games like Dragon's Trap, Monster World, 4, Monster Boy are way much better games and play like metroidvanias.
The Dragon's Trap, has been ported with different visual styles but play the same except for the 2017 remake which is on all modern platforms which makes the game look much better, they reworked the charmstone item (original charmstones gave you acces to items mandatory to beat the game and it was cryptic how many you needed in the original, the remake reworks this only for 100% completion rewards)

The easiest Wonder boy game to beat is "monster world" the one with the blue haired protagonist, it's pretty easy for most part up to the final boss which in the USA/PAL version is poorly balanced, but in japanese version it's easy.

  10. I beat this one back in the day, I don't remember it being hard. I recently beat Wonder Boy on the PS4, with that collection. I was shooting to get all achievements on it and one of them is to get all of those pots. I'm surprised at how similar it is to Adventure Island. One thing that is different is in AI, when you reach the boss you food meter disappears but in WB, it does not.

  11. got this games years after market and even with a game genie me and my roommate played it for hours and the furthest we could get was 8-3 section 3 as that final jump screwed us so badly we just couldnt get through it with that damn bat that comes as your trying to jump and not fall in the pit, very hard game and the sequels are much more fairer
