HISTORY
Gartloch Hospital stood in Glasgow since 1896, and was officially closed in 1996 – and left to the elements.
The City of Glasgow acquired the Gartloch Estate with the purpose of building a hospital, the foundation stone for which was laid in 1892.
It was officially opened as the Gartloch District Asylum, with a peak capacity of 830.
Since its closure, many of the surrounding buildings were converted into homes or demolished to create Gartloch Village – though the Category A listed building remains intact, though derelict.
The Victorian-style towers still stand, though many windows have caved in and the structure is beyond repair.
Many years ago, the grounds also included a tuberculosis sanatorium – set up to deal with the leading cause of death in the western world at the time.
While it was initially opened as a psychiatric hospital, patients were transferred during the outbreak of World War Two – to make room for an emergency centre, with huts erected on the grounds for extra wards.
When the NHS was created in 1948, the hospital joined as a working mental health institution – which it served as until 1996.
Prior to its closure, David Tennant fans may recognise the building from a particularly haunting 90s series about a hospital radio station.
Takin’ Over the Asylum, which was released in 1993, used the exterior of Gartloch as the fictional St Jude’s Asylum.
