Ever since 1982 when Disney’s Epcot Center first opened, a pavilion sponsored by GE had been planned to tie everything in Future World together as it looks far into the future. A year later, that attraction materialized in the form of Horizons, an omnimover ride visiting the lives of family members through their life in the future. It was nothing less than spectacular and very much beloved by many as it was everything Epcot was meant to be and encapsulated the spirt of Walt Disney himself. However just 11 year later it was closed and only operated seasonally. It was abandoned altogether in 1999 and demolished soon after to make way for Mission Space. So join me today as I find out why Disney demolished one of their best attractions ever.

Disney sucked the soul out of Epcot, which is such a shame. Not everything has to be a thrill or tied to an IP.

Disney World is never finished. If you enjoyed riding Horizons, nothing can spoil that thrill.
Mission: SPACE is a successful successor, and it too will be rethemed or updated in the future.
I rode this a couple of times back in the 80s and I used to consider this a sequel to the Carousel of Progress.

Does anyone remember Wannado City? I remember the ambulance rides where you’d “heal” an “injured” person or the firefighter thing where you’d shoot water the window of a burning building or the plane pilot simulations. It’s sad that it closed, and I know it was for financial reasons (a quick google search can tell you that), but a dive into the history would be really cool
Imagine being an engineer at Disney in the 80’s…. You would be living a dream. You’d be living in California while it was still the most beautiful place on earth (sadly that’s gone) AND you’d get to go into a dream everyday. Sad how far we’ve fallen.

Horizons was always one of my and my family's favorite spots. We'd ride it typically once in the morning and again later in the day. I can still smell the orange…
I always thought a major reason was the ground issue as in it was sinking.
Tragic as Robert McCall is a legendary artist. What a gaff on Disney’s part. Hopefully it’s spitting in a warehouse somewhere.

20:31 I think almost everybody who has spent years studying and loving Disney’s theme park history has given up by the year 2022. The decisions just can’t be justified anymore if you’re an objective person who knows the company’s previous creative heights.
I worked in that building from the time I was 19 until 22. I loved Horizons. The goofy movie. The body wars ride. The healthy food restaurants. I'm sad it's gone.
Its really sad that a lot of rides nowadays just don't last the test of time, especially older rides that are decades old.
We live in a world now that is hitting new technological strides almost on the daily. There are always new things to look at which unfortunately leaves older things to just become memory. Such is the way of things.
It's all about the thrill rides now and being bigger and faster than the rest, because that's what people want.
VR and AR and such has kind of revitalised the interactive experience, but honestly rides like this will never be a thing again.

I love what Horizons represents to many, although I don't love it as much as they do. But I do love the pyramid like building. All in all, I wish it had never been taken down. The replacement attraction is a major trash. If you are claustrophobic, DON'T GO! IT'S NOT THRILLING, JUST HORRIBLE!
Disney admission tickets and resort accommodations are expensive . For 5 days, a family of four could easily spend $6000-$25,000. I’m not sure why they need sponsors. They should not have a problem keeping an attraction operating.
This is one of those examples of how the Disney parks were unique because they were inspirational—the made you imagine and dream of future possibilities. Now, it’s just a thrill ride theme park for adults that sometimes bring their kids. Because they made their brand is so generic, Disney has been reduced to buying other brands to prop themselves up. When they run out of other brands to buy and they finally squeeze all the imagination out of everything else, they will go out of business.

Horizons I rode over 15x's, However Mission space I was only able to handle twice. How is the 2017 version? I didn't try riding it the last time I was there.
18:18 I've been to Disney World once (I live a couple hours from Disney Land) and I still remember being in the airport hotel the night before we headed to Florida and seeing the report on the news that a kids died at Disney World on Mission Space. I made sure that when we went to Epcot to run straight to that ride to see how killer this ride was…didn't get a scratch.
I haven't been to Epcot since 1992. Once they started removing all the inspiring rides and turned it into just another theme park I wasn't interested anymore.
