The war in Ukraine is not going as planned for Russia, and Ukraine currently has the upper hand on the ground. Under these circumstances, experts say there is no way Russia will seek to end the fighting.
In a wide-ranging conversation with host Steve Clemons, Andrey Kortunov, one of Russia’s foremost political scientists, paints a bleak picture of the Ukraine war.
Kortunov says the real issue Russia is grappling with is: does it want long-term isolation from the West, or compromise and reintegration? Everything else falls into place depending on the outcome of that fateful decision.

I can tell that this guy is an armchair analyst who never actually visited Ukraine prior to the war. His talk about Ukraine and Russia gradually drifting apart after the collapse of the USSR is nonsense. I visited Ukraine in the mid-1990s, shortly after the collapse of the USSR. I talked with many Ukrainians, and they were universal in their LOATHING of Russia. We heard on multiple occasions how Russians had tried to ban Ukrainian literature, force Ukrainians to speak Russian, abolish Ukrainian culture, destroy Ukrainian monuments, etc. I'm sorry to disagree with many of the people who wrote comments below, but this entire notion of Ukraine drifting away from Russia is a figment of his imagination. Ukraine had to have close ties with Russia as it was getting its economy established out of necessity, but in the long run they want nothing to do with Russia if they can avoid it. And the current invasion has only exacerbated and cemented that feeling into the hearts of the Ukrainian people.

The speaker is definitely choosing his words. In the final analysis it boils down to a pretty simple statement: "Russia has invaded a sovereign nation with the intentions of absorbing it back into the Russian federation" (recall the Sudetenland issue, circa 1938). Unless we wish to repeat the sequence of 1938 the other world sovereign nations will have to analyze the situation and see if they believe that all countries have the right to self determination. If so, they will have no other choice but to state quite clearly that this is an unacceptable action and that all invading forces be withdrawn from Ukraine. All other actions by the aggressor must then be rejected and all other available economic measures must be implemented until the current incursion is halted. Certainly any nuclear action will escalate, and any nuclear use will result in the devastation of all parties and reversion of the world's population to an iron-age level of existence at best.
