Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. You talking about loving your kiddos brought back a wonderful memories of my own mom. Getting off the school bus and walking down a long driveway on a cool fall day. As we enter the house my Mom is standing there ladling out hot dripping No Bake Cookies on to wax paper. Me and my 4 sisters all excited and the smell lingering in the air and us waiting intensely for their cookies to set up. It did make us feel so love. Thank you for jogging that memory for me

  3. Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. I tried to fix an earlier comment and it disappeared. There is a gifted book that was sent to your yahoo account with a great chocolate chip cookie recipe. Maybe my previous comment didn’t fit some community standard so there’s less info in this comment. I hope you find some things that will help on your health journey.

  5. This was so wonderful. I loved this style video. More 😁 also, gonna have to check out the pampered chef because I can’t properly bake a cookie to save my life but I can make intricate pastries which should be hard 😂

  7. Well I needed to hear this so much right now. Hard not to ask why is this happening and being hard on self during the life process…. Feeling like a total failure when raising kids and finding yourself being challenged to your core on a daily basis is hard. Thank you for your video today, a lot of my friends are just now having kids and my youngest is 10… so they are in this baby love bubble and I’m in teenage torment😂 lol thinking of all the ways I am screwing up, but yes I do have control of how I react and the tone that can be set for the house, more then I think I do in the moment. Your message is such a good reminder to give us moms who care some credit 🙂 and a hug for staying true to our core beliefs and not giving up. Thank you for your words of encouragement…. I’m not a bad mom, I care 💜

  8. Hey Jess!!CUP 4 CUP flour makes an easy transition from wheat to gf. I use it in all my recipes and you just substitute the flour. Depending on what your doing you just have to adjust your time a little. I find with gf recipes there’s a fine line between under done, just right , and over done. And usually takes a couple minutes more for cookies and 10-15 minutes more for other baked goods ( dessert bars and such) ! Hope this helps!

  9. I’m amazed at how insightful you are at a fairly young age. Well compared to me anyway!!! 🤭 my husband and I really are reminded what is important in life and the stuff that really isn’t! Being the thermostat is a wonderful analogy and thank you for your thoughts! 💜

  11. Brilliant. Loved your thermostat message. Really needed something like that right now for my beautiful marriage that has been a little bumpy of late. I’m popping your message on being the thermostat as well as wanting things to always be ideal, into my tool kit. It’s only early morning where I am and I already feel like today is going to be a better day. Thank you 🌻

  12. I adore your busy chats where you're busy doing something else (like shelling peas or crocheting) and sharing your perspective. I'd like to call some of these tidbits Jess's Proverbs because they are so much more far-reaching than you may think. You brought me to tears when you said that some of you may have had to go through something no one should have to go through, but you did and I'm sorry. Fact is, the platitudes we may have been told that sound so cliche sometimes have their roots in truth. Sometimes bad things happen to good people, and sometimes there is nothing these good people could have done to change that. For the ones who go through that, the best thing they can do is look at all their good and bad times past and see they made it through to the other side 100% of the time, so they're scoring 100% on completion. These things can change us, but they don't always. It's good to know that we can become conscious of not only our environment, but also how others in our environment are navigating. And something as simple as the smell of something nostalgic, that doesn't always take a massive amount of effort, can help turn the moods of everyone in that environment towards the better.
It's funny how when you mention this, I remember the smell and taste of JuicyFruit gum and the memories it invokes for me. I was in my late teens and I shared a piece of this chewing gum with my Mom. We were on our way someplace in her truck, and as she places the unwrapped half piece of chewing gum in her mouth, she tells me how it reminds her of her childhood visits "to the South" in the summertime (she was raised in New York, but had Aunts and Uncles here in Georgia). So the flavor and smell of JuicyFruit gum triggers my childhood memory of my Mother sharing a childhood memory. Both are pleasant reminders of simpler happy times…
